On 18 March 1893 the opera 'Toldi' by Ödön (Edmund von) Mihalovich (1842-1929) was premiered at the Royal Hungarian Opera House in Budapest. This was during a period of Hungarian patriotic cultural revival. By this time, József Toldi had already changed his family surname from the Germanic sounding Trostler (or Trosztler) to the well-known Hungarian name of Toldi. It is most likely that József and Ida, in June 1893, chose their son's name Ödön after the composer of the opera 'Toldi'.
