William Meredith who died in 1833 was not the father of Joseph, because he was about the same age as Joseph. William Meredith received a letter written on September 1819 informing him of the death of his mother, Jane (Henry) Meredith (1738 - 1819), widow of Colonel Samuel Meredith. The letter was written by his brother in law David S. Garland, husband of Jane (Meredith) Garland, who also served as a U.S. Congressman from Virginia.
Elizabeth Henry, who is occasionally reported to be William's wife, was rather his maternal aunt, whom he did not marry.
