yDNA conflict - when merging, so most likely not his father-
An ancestor of his great-grandson's Ira Lee Martin married a Martin Cousin Mary Agnes Bennett Martin.
Following her ancestry, it led us to Capt. William Martin, but the yDNA tells another story, which may mean her ancestors followed the wrong trail.
I merged so will disconnect his parents, since the yDNA is conflicted.
My brother is David William Martin referenced above (R-BY27212 from Y-67). My great grandfather was William M. Martin (1813-1887) in S.C., his father (my gg grandfather) was Joel E. Martin (1793-1877). Joel's father was Joseph Martin (1760-1833). Our Joseph Martin (1760-1833) is buried in Old Macedonia Cemetery, 612 Percival Rd., Richland Co., SC, USA. His only wife was Joanna Rawlinson (1764-1852). I have now found that he is linked on Geni to Capt. William Martin, MD of Virginia and that he is his son. I am going to be doing further research regarding this. I would esp. be interested in any documentation showing that my Joseph Martin is actually his son as this would open up my family tree another 4-5 generations. I have had several hits of same DNA in Virginia and will be pursuing that also. Any help would be graciously appreciated!
I am a BigY700 match to David William Martin. I believe that my third great-grandfather John James Williams, born around 1796 in Virginia (according to census records), is the son of a Martin man and a Williams woman.
My 3GG is known in two extensive genealogies as John Williams and James Williams, so my kinfolk have taken to calling him John James Williams. Neither list his parents ... and they have been a mystery to us until YDNA started linking us to dozens of Martin men.
David William Martin and I also match Don C, Vassey, and I have spoken with the Vassey kin and they too are looking for a Martin match.
I am very willing and eager to collaborate with everyone in the project.

Hello, Martin cousin. This information about Capt. William Martin, MD of Virginia , my great-uncle Ira Lee Martin married his cousin, Mary Agnes Bennett Martin our family records said they were Martin Cousin's who married and shared several great-grandfathers together.
So, we traced her lineage and it led us to Capt. Henry, Martin, MD and he did have a son that matched Joseph Martin- As well as DNA matching with all cousins from that branch of the family. In addition, cousin's matched autosomal DNA from a few of the ancestor's of the other son's of Henry Martin.
It was research- from this cousin's marriage to my great-uncle Ira Lee Martin. We knew they shared GGF's from Virginia- we looked at her lineage and documentation to this man, this was finally the common link.
Pvt. Thomas Martin is your great aunt's fourth great uncle.

When you click on View Details, it shows ONE line... is the difference between the number of SNPs tested is how I think they differentiate it. Very confusing but as Erica Howton mentioned, is not always a conflicting DNA as the Geni sees it. I do know that FtDNA is working on something so I am hoping this is one issue they will resolve with Geni.

This Joseph Martin i my second cousin 7 generations removed: https://www.geni.com/path/Cynthia-Hicks-Curtis-A183502-US7875087-co...
I noticed my very good friend of decades Private User is on the DNA tab and just FYI, I call her my friend first but she used to be my husband's secretary when he owned a business many years ago and her husband and mine both went to the same college. After doing DNA we have discovered that while we are only very distantly related, we are indeed cousins and I call her my Tate cousin. lol She and her husband are my husband's and my Harley riding partners. Small world, huh? Any way, it was quite a surprise to me to see her under the DNA tab on this profile. Geni/Family Finder say she is his 6th great niece: https://www.geni.com/path/Joseph-Martin+is+related+to+Linda-McKean-...
And let me remind everyone or inform sine it was news to me until a few months ago: Only about HALF of all 4th cousins will share DNA. They are still related but will not share DNA.
I need to correct myself on Jeffrey Clark Martin. I do match him on the BigY700 YDNA test. His branch is "younger" than my R-BY27212, so he is R-BY146935. It appears his branch was formed in Ireland. It sits at 12 SNP generations: 80 to 100 years per SNP generation, or sometime between 821 and 1061 AD.
Bill Wood, the admin for FTDNA- BiGY Facebook Group, just told me that the R-BY27212 haplogroup is "at most 432 years old," and not stuck in the British Iron Age as listed by the SNP Tracker app. This is actually good news, because it is likely during the surname era. Contact me at kennethwwilliams@gmail.com if you wish to discuss this with me.
The "note" on the About is not helpful in that it doesn't warn exactly who this "other" Joseph Martin is and people don't always SEE a note. I would suggest making a Not the same as or Do not confuse with and then add THAT profile's link to the note:
About
Please note: please watch Joseph Martin’s. Not to be confused with Col. Joseph Martin, born 1760 yDNA RM-269, nor the son of General Joseph Longknife Martin born in the same area. very important to follow the wives of the different Joseph’s. Smart Copy really not a good choice for this profile, most likely uploading individual Will, documentation
Update from the YDNA front. My second cousin Danny Lewis Williams has completed his BigY-700 test, and as expected has been placed in R-BY27212 along with me, "b h," Don C. Vassey (who descends from a Martin male who died in the Civil War) and David W. Martin.
Bill Wood, at FTDNA-BiGY Facebook Group, now estimates that R-BY27212 was formed about 240 years ago, most likely in the Americas, so about 1781. This is a huge advancement in time, and I am almost certain that the haplogroup was formed along the Eastern Seaboard between Virginia and South Carolina. My hunch is South Carolina, based on the BigY-700 matches to two people with deep South Carolina roots.
Contact me at kennethwwilliams@gmail.com to discuss this matter.
Update 2. We continue to test more people or upgrade matches to BigY.
We all match R-YP658, occupied by two Dutch men Jan S. Raap and Jaab van der Horst.
The branch below that is R-BY27212, occupied by David W Martin and Bruce Hale.
There are two co-equal branches the descend from R-BY27212. They are:
1. R-FTB64834, occupied by William Void Martin and Don C. Vassey (Martin descendant)
There are three sub-branches belonging to four Williams men who are searching for their Martin common ancestor. Leland Randal Williams (R-FTA-45618) is the first branch; James Alan Williams (R-FTA46021) is the second branch. Kenneth Williams and Danny Lewis Williams (R-FTA97287) is the youngest branch.
2. R-BY34211, occupied by Mitchell Martin.
There are two sub-branches. The older one is R-BY146935, occupied by Jeffery Clark Martin. the youngest one is R-BY62178, occupied by Terry James Martin and Henry E. Clements (who believes he descends from a Martin).
We are upgrading to BigY a close match to George Johnny Wigginton, who is trying to confirm which Martin male is the father of Martin Wigginton, born circa 1777 in Laurens County, South Carolina.
We also are testing another Williams to see if he fits into our family clade.
I found a probated will dated 1805 Richland County, SC for Joseph Martin, SR https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000199159369841
List about 10 children plus several grandchildren, did list Joseph Martin. so we have Joseph Martin on a probated Will.
My brother, Lee Martin, BigY DNA test reports will be in sometime this week, his surname is Martin, and he is a direct Martin to Joseph Martin born 1760 d 1823.
When you click on the document - click again on the Original Document Tab then you will get a clear copy and can enlarge the copy as well.
In my opinion, Joseph's father's name was indeed Joseph of Richland County, who died in 1805, he was from Scotland.
He also had a brother named Martin Martin, which goes along with the lineage that the documentation follows.
We will see what Big yDNA group my brother matches.
I have all the documentation, baptism records, probated wills, etc, but would like the BigY DNA verification as well.
Have 4 different lines of Martin documentation waiting.
