This link might shed light on her parentage:

"The brother of this Thomas Brown had a daughter that married the notorious Gideon Gibson and they hightailed it to South Carolina and started the Gideon clan. Is this all a coincidence?"

The Thomas Brown mentioned is this one:

Thomas Brown, of Chowan

I'm a Gibson descendant and a descendant of the mentioned Thomas Brown, so it all fits.

I just found that link, so I haven't finished reading it but as I was connecting the lines in my Ancestry tree, I thought it worth mentioning here since she has non parents connected here. If I'm following it correctly, these would be her parents:

Gideon Gibson, of the Pee Dee River

Mary Gibson

Any assistance sorting all that out would be appreciated.

I have a lot of interest in this for my Gibson cousins in Horry and Marion Counties, SC. I cannot get past 1850. It is frustrating.

Well, there is more information at that link than I'd seen otherwise, but I'm taking sinus meds and not feeling up to par, so any serious thinking is a bit over my head until I get better. I cycle through this ALL the time, the older I get the worse it's getting. I'll keep reading it and hope I can piece more of it together, but the more of us working on it, the better chance of finding some real answers. You're awesome to be helping your Gibson cousins. I bet i'm related to them! :)

Debbie Gambrell, hope you feel better soon. I truly sympathize with your sinus issues.

Here is my cousins' line Noah Donald Gibson.

Uncle Noah was my mother's sister's husband and also my father's fourth cousin through Floyd lines. I feel sure he is connected to Gideon and to some others that were in Marion County, SC at the time, but have failed to make the connection. Still working on it. Trying to also find more on his Hammond lines and thought that might be easier. I just need more work time.

Thanks. It's all the weather changes we've been having, it always does it to me these days.

Anyway, I AM related to your cousins but not via Gibson lines:

Noah Donald Gibson is your 6th cousin twice removed.

I'm sure all the connections aren't on Geni because in my Ancestry tree Gideon is my distant cousin coming in on his Shivers / Chevers line but on Geni he's just an inlaw conneciton through the Brown / Strickland lines.

There are many more connections than on Geni, but we will to keep working on them. It is never ending, my friend. Never ending.

Mary Gibson was a white who married Gideon Gibson, of the Pee Dee River a free person of color, is currently listed as on Geni as daughter of Thomas Browne & Mary Browne Joyner

However, she is also seen as daughter of William Brown and Martha Bracewell, and named in her father’s will.

Notes from Joanne Pezzullo

William Browne and Martha Brasswell/Bracewell are parents of Mary who married Gideon Gibson. After William Browne died, Martha Brasswell Brown married WILLIAM MURPHY ancestor of the Pee Dee MURPHY family. So Maurice Murphy was related to Gideon Gibson somehow.

I haven’t switched parents yet, we need more sources added to the little tree I just started:

Martha Murphy

William Brown, Gent., of Albemarle & Chowan

William Murphy

Col. Maurice Murphy

Merged with the existing tree.

BROWN - http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&db=clinardj... (dead link)

The English immigrant John Browne/Brown died 1726 in IOW VA. His son, William Brown (Gentleman of Albemarle) married Martha Braswell and moved the family to Chowan NC where he died in 1718. Their daughter Martha married the Lumbee Indian [??] William Strickland in NC. Their daughter Mary Anne Brown married Gideon Gibson ~1720 in NC. Recall that Gideon was a likely son of Hubbard Gibson. Gideon, along with his father, moved his family from VA to Halifax NC then Chowan NC and eventually to Craven SC where Gideon died in 1781.

Children of Thomas William Brown , Gentleman of Albemarle and Martha Braswell are:

4 iii. Mary Anne Brown , wife of Gideon Gibson was born ABT 1706 in IOW VA or Bertie Precinct, Chowan NC, and died 13 OCT 1754 in Edgecombe, Edgecombe, NC.

William Browne died 1719 Chowan Co NC

ill of William Brown 15 Dec 1718 - recorded 21 July 1719 [SS 341 p 84 NC wills]

  • In the name of God Amen, this 15th day of December in the year of our Lord God 1718 - I William Brown in ye county of Albemarle [Chowan Co] in ye province of North Carolina, am sick and week. . .
  • I bequeath to my Lawful wife my bed and furniture and my horse Tobe and a horse Cate. . .
  • The remaining part of ye land I leave holy and truly to my sonnes disposing. My hold desire is for my wife to have ye remaining part of my estate to be equally divided between her and my seven children excepting one hundred acres of land to William Boon a brother.
  • I do make and desire choice of Thomas Manders and my wife as executors. All children under age.
  • Wits: Thomas Manders, Thomas Smith, Martha Brown

It looks like it’s more likely this Mary Brown was the wife of the elder Gideon Gibson (d. Abt. 1754), doesn’t it?

In addition to correcting her parentage, can we sort her too many children?

This list is a start but has issues.

Children of Mary Anne Brown and Gideon Gibson , Sr.

  • + 2 i. Gideon Gibson , Jr. & in SC by 1731 was born ABT 1721 in NC, and died FEB 1781 in Craven SC. md Mary Ann Browne. [the same name as his mother??]
  • + 3 ii. Mary Gibson , wife of Moses Riddle was born ABT 1722 in NC, and died in VA.
  • + 4 iii. John Gibson was born ABT 1723 in NC.
  • 5 iv. Jordan Gibson , traveled with Daniel Boone was born ABT 1724 in NC, and died 1788 in TN.

  • 9 viii. William Gibson was born 9 OCT 1743 in Winyaw, , South Carolina, and died 1785 in Tennessee. [she would have been too old! Son of Gideon Gibson, Jr.?)

More complete will.

This should prove, Martha wife of William Brown was dau of Richard and Sarah Braswell.

Have original copy of William Brown's will not sure if it says 'brother' but his sister was married to William Boon, daughter Mary Boon married Hubbard Gibson.

That by 1720 William Murphy/Murfee had married the relict of William Brown.

That Martha Brasswell/Brown/Murphy is mentioned in her father's will.

And that Richard GRAY named his daughter MARTHA BROWN years after she had married William Murphy.
