Hello, I apologise in advance for spelling errors of russian names and places, there is a lot of uncertainty from the papers I have access to!

I am trying to trace my Ukrainian grandfather, who was called Sergei Mikailovitch Rodkevitch. He married my finnish grandmother in France in 1940, and I have 23 May 1900 as his date of birth on his French identity papers. He was born in Vinnitza, his father was a pope, Mikhail Rodkevitch, and his mother was called Maria Ivanevski/ Ivanitzki. The family moved to Poltava at some point. We suspect the date and year of birth is wrong. I have tried contacted Vinnitza church records, but no luck so far. I have no info on how he went from Ukraine to France, but likely to happen during the revolution, and he seemed to have travelled alone, not with his family. I am trying to piece together his history as his daughter, my mother, is turning 80 soon and she has no history, so I am trying to find her one... Any help you might be able to give me would be amazing. Thank you!!

Hi Katherine!
I do not know how it works in the Vinnitza archive, but 10 years ago I sent a request to the Poltava archive and received a reply by mail from the Ukrainian Embassy with very interesting data.
I know that after World War II many churches in this area were destroyed and they probably do not have documents from the time you are asking about. But they should send official response in this case.

Thanks Erika, I will try that.

I have qalso sent a message to the Vinnitza archives, let's see! Thank you again for suggesting this.

Thank you, the problem is that I don't speak Russian, so it's pretty much impossible for me to search the records by myself...

Hi Katherine, familysearch wiki project <Eastern Europe > has many volunteers who speak Russian, Ukrainian.
you can send your request to the archives using google translate.
Do you have a DNA test?

What are FamilySearch Genealogy Research Groups?

FamilySearch Genealogy Research Groups are resources where individuals can post specific genealogical questions or translation requests regarding a country or region in the world. The community consists of individuals who wish to collaborate and help one another find answers.

To find a research group, you can go to one of two places:
1. FamilySearch Community: found on the FamilySearch website. You must log in using your FamilySearch account to view and post questions. Click here to watch a short introductory video clip.
2. FamilySearch Facebook Groups: found on Facebook and maintained by FamilySearch. You must have a Facebook account to view questions and "join" the group to post questions.

Katherine, I speak Russian in case you will need a help to translate or understand document in Russian or Ukrainian

Katherine, I can help with Russian language too.

Thank you both, that's brilliant. I have tried searching the above but so far no luck!! Maybe I have the wrong spellings?

Hi there,

I have made some progress!

I now have my grandfather's birth records
He was Sergey Mikhailovitch Rodkevich, born on 23.05.1902 in Czułczyce, chełmski, Lublin Voivodeship, Poland - I have his birth record.

Serge Mikhailovich Rodkevich

His Father was a Ukrainian pope, Mikhail Arefanovich Rodkevitch (born around 1858), went to seminar in Podolie, his mother was called Anna Mitrofanova Ivnaitskaia/ Ivanitsky, born around 1869, father was also a pope Mitrofan Ivanitsky, and she had a brother called Afanasy.

I also have birth records for three brothers, Boris, Alexei, Andrey. But we know he had other siblings, including quite a few sisters.

I would love some help to find records for Mikhail, for Anna, and his siblings, to see if we can trace any of our existing relatives.
