Taken from "Memories of Knife River" published by the Descendants of the Original Settlers" Writer, Dan Minahan.

Peter Bugge, one of the first persons to open a fish stand in Knife River, was well known to many tourists and local customers. They were assured of getting fresh fish properly dressed by "Mr. Fisherman" himself.

Down through the years you meet certain people whose personal characteristics and everyday living are so representative of the times and the place that they remain locked in your memory bank for years. Such a man was Peter Bugge. The old timers can remember when he used to come into Loining's store to shoot the breeze, maybe have a beer and play the slot machine. Pete always had an audience whether it was just plain conversation or a discussion of the daily prices of fish.

We can still hear him say with a little Norwegian accent "Sam Yonson is paying da best price today." Then he'd proceed to quote all the other campnaies' prices and at that time there were a number of companies picking up fish along the shore.

Peter and his good wife endured many problems throughout those years but managed to raise a large family, and like many of the other fisherman along the shore did it on their own. Even during the great depression they made it without help from anyone.

Few married couples ever asked to bear the tragic loss of three of their children in a disatrous fire, Mr. and Mrs. Bugge were. Yet somehow they drew strength from each other and carried on. In spite of all his burdens, "Pete" remained a friendly outgoing person that everyone was happy to call friend.
