The first <Bailey> to settle in what would become West Virginia was:

Richard Peyton Bailey

Richard Payton Bailey and Elizabeth Ann Belcher are considered among some of the first settlers of southern West Virginia.

That family had its trials as well, to say the least.

as did the parents, whomever they were, of
Thomas Bailey Christian

I find it interesting to note that the massacres that produced the three orphans (one being TBC) and the Bailey massacre were about the same time.

The implication of the opening post is to attempt to uncover a story of Baileys and the 3 orphans... if there is one...

I thought there were 4 orphans adopted by Capt Mastin

Earl Smith Yes, they were adopted by Capt. Mastin.

I am trying to figure out why the Christian chose the middle nam <Bailey>/

just noticing John Payton Bailey = RIchard's son, and a prominent man in Tazewell

A son of John Payton Bailey was Mastin Bailey .. so there the adoptive surname of TBC, <MASTIN> again..
But Mastin Bailey os of a later generation TBC being born in the 1770's and Mastin Bailey in 1802

Here's a regional example of another <Bailey> relationship:
https://www.geni.com/path/Archibald-Bailey+is+related+to+Thomas-Christian?from=6000000021330795395&path_type=inlaw&to=6000000007300515662

It involves the <Christian> name as well...

Pertinent to TBC's youth and rescue we read in Archiabald Baily's father's profile:

"the massacre of the settlers at lower Clover Bottoms of Bluestone in 1778, and the Clay children had been massacred and driven to safety at James Bailey's near New Hope in 1781, RICHARD BAILEY brought his family and settled near his son James"

Richard Peyton Bailey
Archibald Bailey

Looking back on what I wrote as a note in TBC's timeline two years ago:

1777
Age 6
conflict that resulted in fostering of small children
Appalachian Mountains, or near Ft. Randolph
traditional unverified account
"Following the murder of Chief Cornstalk October 9, 1777, at Fort Randolph, Point Pleasant, VA. now WV. A white-man friend, Thomas Mastin and his Indian wife, Agnes adopted 4 of his children." ~• more research is needed
(april, 2022) = MMvB vol. curator"

Might: ""the massacre of the settlers at lower Clover Bottoms of Bluestone in 1778" have been the one where the three children : TBC &
Hezekiah Whitt (Low Hawk)
&
Sarah Mountain Raven Adkins

were rescued?

I was in the midst of looking at the 1910 census of Paynesville/Bradshaw this morning when my eyes fell upon a family, surname <Bailey>
1910 United States Federal Census
West Virginia
McDowell
Bradshaw
District 0092
Family # 38 = Jacob (38) and his wife Franc(e)s and 3 children. As he was born in WV bur his parents were born in VA, I thought there might be a connection to the TBC Bailey story. ,,, There may well be..

I added this Jacob Crockett “Jake” Bailey to the Geni tree just now.

I should explain more:
1. One of TBC's grandchildren is: Nancy Jane Reed "Aquewa Apetotha" (Christian) of McDowell County, who lived on her famliy's Reed land just down the Dry Fork from where Jacob Crockett Bailey lived.
Her mother is: Nancy Jane Reed "Aquewa Apetotha" (Christian) , TBC's daughter

2. Nancy Jane Reed "Aquewa Apetotha" (Christian) father was a very large land original owner in early McDowell, as was his son John Lindsey Reed . Now: this son John Lindsey aka Lindsay Reed was also a large land owner in McDowell. He had 1,000 acres +/- in Brandshaw/Paynesville while his father had 2,000 ac. +/- in Garland/Avondale. (These communities nearly border each other)

3. Taking 1) and 2) into account, I think that it is less than a coincidence that
The Baileys of Tazewell settled on or near Reed/ Christian land in Bradshaw, especially as we see a daughter of Thomas Bailey Christian and Louisa Katherine Christian (Harman) ( Nancy Jane Reed "Aquewa Apetotha" (Christian) (1812-1887) ) and her progeny living 'right there'.

Note as well that a Harman (vis. TBC's wife's family) had 3,000 ac on the very same Dry Fork (!) These land holdings tie the Christian, Reed, & Bailey families together both as major players and repetitively bonded kin-folk.
