One common mistake I am finding on trees published on the internet is in regards to the death date.
All too often, the date an obituary is published in a newspaper is mistaken for the date the person died. Usually the death occurred on a day previous to the date the obituary was published.
There are three dates, even four sometimes, to consider in regards to the death date:
1) The actual day the person died
2) The date of of the memorial service or funeral
3) The date of burial
4) The date an obituary is published in a newspaper
The memorial service/funeral date can be different from the burial date if the family decides to hold a memorial service before burial, or if the body is transported to a different location for burial. In my family there have been two services: the memorial service at a church, and another burial service at the place of burial.
If an obituary only gives a day of the week previous to the publication of the obituary, you can find the actual date by consulting the website timeanddate.com. Look for the calendar section and enter the year. From there, you can find the month, then look for the date the obituary was published, and from there you can find the previous day of the week, then the death date.

Thank you, Tim.

5) the date a death was registered with the authorities (often a day later or even up to 3 if a weekend is involved)
