I'm trying to sort out exactly which of the four Williams Smith's in this line was tithable in 1762. Here is my train of thought:

Geni shows four William Smiths in this line:

1. William Smith of Nottoway b. 1730 would be William Smith I

William Smith, of Nottoway

2. his son William Smith Sr. would actually be William Smith II and his About section shows:

William Smith was born circa 1777 in Johnston County, North Carolina.

William Smith, Sr.

3. his son William would be William Smith III and his About section has the note:

Tithed on 1 in his household in Granville NC 1762. (His wife).

William Smith, Jr.

4. his son William would be William Smith IV and he is listed as the one tithed in 1762 as part of his profile name but his birth is shown 1811.

William Smith, Old Cheraw, tithable 1762 Epping Forest Parish

So, what seems to me is that the only one who could have been tithed in 1762 would have been William Smith I who was born in 1730 since the 1762 tithable list predates the birth of the latter three generations of William Smiths.

It gets confusing with so many same-name folks in subsequent generations of each other, but using the timeline given to work with, am I making sense or am I missing something?

Thanks for any clarification.

Makes total sense to me!
