Good evening! My name is Alexander and im from Russia
I connected my ftDNA test familyfinder with geni and i've seen Baltic states in my populations
A lot of swedes/germans in matches and some surnames with prefix "Von"
I really need a help because my paternal great grandpa was an unknown german soldier during WW2 in Ukraine
I hope that you'll help me with my family tree and with my researches

Best Regards Alexander

Ill suggest that you transfer your DNA results also to myheritage, if they are not there. Im not sure if its possbile may depend how old the test is. Transfer should be free, but the the tools can be opened with some money.

Hi, Alexander.

It can certainly be tricky. My great grandfather's brother was a German soldier during World War I, and his body was never found. We believe he was buried in a mass grave.

Regarding a surname with Von in it; it means "of" or "from" denoting a place they were from and represented nobility. It was added to the names of individuals who were knighted.

what test level is that R-M198? you could get more information of your paternal line if you make big Y test, but it is quite expensive.

How close are those closest matches in FTDNA? start doing their trees here , if you can seen their trees in FTDNA (put dont put living persons here). Finding unknown person isnt easy, especially if there is no written hints or any family stories about that person. One thing is to try find what army groups have been in that certain time in Ukraine and that same place.

I had troubles with haplogroup
First time they(ftDNA) sent me not my results(name and surname was like Ivan Ivanov) and i dont think that it could help me, because it's a "presumed" result as it is written

My matches with prefix von :Von tiesenhausen(he ignores me) and Von Amsberg

It gaves an error when i tried to download my results to myheritage

Alexander, I recommend also taking a test with www.23andme.com and www.ancestry.com to make sure you have covered all the major sites. Transferring results between companies has become problematic. You can transfer free to www.gedmatch.com also.
DNA testing is not popular in Germany. Your matches will usually be descendants of a German who emigrated.

If you mean predicted result, then its because its not accurate test, what test it is YDNA-37? you only get confirmed result with addionational SNP test or full test (BIG y). Taking those SNP test is not good idea, better take big y so you get final haplogroup. What error do you have in myheritage? I would try again are you sure you are sending right file?

Please upload to www.gedmatch.com and let me know your gedmatch number then to my email

hittscher@yahoo.com

As I am Tier 1 member there I can do some extra things for you.

greetings

OLaf Hittscher

It gaves me an error "this file is not valid"
