These are kinfolk on my son's paternal side. This Thomas had two daughters connected to him named Comfort:
I've been trying to sort the lines in my son's tree and be sure I have them correct, and I don't know much about the lines. As connected, they're both my son's 6th great aunts.
There is nothing in the About section for Comfort Rogers, and she's connected to two husbands named John Rogers. ?
It 'seems' to me that on Geni at least, the only documented branch is the one for Sarah Comfort Prettyman who married David Marvel. She is also connected to a husband named Moses Daisy. So why does it show her married surname as Rogers since neither of her connected husbands were a Rogers?
Is it possible that there was only one Comfort Prettyman and she married both David Marvel and a John Rogers? I don't know about the extra John Rogers or Moses Daisy. I'm just trying to understand the issues regarding one or two Comforts and why both have the surname Rogers if only one of them married a Rogers.
Any help clarifying any of this and/or making an needed corrections in the connections would be appreciated. Thanks so much.
I was just noticing that on the various Ancestry trees that showed up in our Hints, they refer to Sarah just as Sarah (Prettyman) Marvel and not as Sarah Comfort (Prettyman) Rogers.
So I'm wondering if over time somehow two sisters named Sarah and Comfort have gotten their info meshed together in a confusing way.
I think I can respond to your questions and resolve the issues you have presented.
In the Prettyman family there were two brothers, William and Thomas. One of Thomas's sons was also named Thomas, thus Thomas Prettyman II.
William was married 4 times and had a total of 12 children, including Comfort Prettyman who was born in 1726. That Comfort Prettyman married David Marvel (my 5th Great Grandfather) in 1754. They had three children: Prudence, Patience, and Prettyman (my 4th Great Granfather). They were divorced sometime prior to 1788 (date not known for sure) and David was married a second time, in 1789, to Sarah Comfort Prettyman, one of the daughters of Thomas Prettyman II. She would then be the Sarah Comfort Marvel.
Going back to Thomas Prettyman II: he had 15 children (or more, depending on the source you consult). Among his children were Comfort Prettyman (b. 1739, so 13 years younger than her cousin, also named Comfort Prettyman, daughter of William, born in 1726). That Comfort Prettyman married John Rogers, makng her Comfort (Prettyman) Rogers. As noted above, among Thomas Prettyman II's children was Sarah Comfort Prettyman, born in 1760, who was a younger sister of Comfort (Prettyman) Rogers and a cousin of Comfort (Prettyman) Marvel.
If that isn't confusing enough, think about my 4th Greath Grandfather, Prettyman Marvel who married Lavina Rogers, daughter of John and Comfort (Prettyman) Rogers. That means both his mother and his mother-in-law were named Comfort. And, after his parents were divorced, his father married the aunt of his wife, Lavina Rogers. And so go the Days of Our Lives!
A few years after Sarah Comfort Prettyman married David Marvel (in 1789, when he was 60 and she was 29!), David Marvel died (in 1796). She was re-married to Moses Dazey (rather than Daisy).
Showing all this another way:
William Prettyman --> children included:
Comfort Prettyman
+ David Marvel / later divorced
Thomas Prettyman --> chldren included
Comfort Prettyman
+ John Rogers
Sarah Comfort Prettyman
+ David Marvel (died in 1796)
+ Moses Dazey
I hope that helps clear up the confusion.
Private User - thanks for taking time to share all that info.
My original post was from 2021, so it's all cold on my memory at this point. These folks are on my son's paternal line. He's a descendant of Thomas' daughter Patience who married Edmund Knowles, so I was trying to get their connections correct in our Ancestry tree. I just recall that at the time I was working on it, there was a lot of confusing info. Geni has my son's Patience listed as Prudence Patience, but as best I recall that was one of the issues - people didn't agree on her name whether Prudence or Patience and some like Geni just put her together as Prudence Patience. In our tree, I just have her as Patience because of info such as this in her Ancestry Hints where the name Prudence doesn't show up:
Name Patience Prettyman
Father Thomas Prettyman
Mother Elizabeth Prettyman
The Marvel line is a paternal cousin line for my son.
That said, I haven't looked back at any of this since 2021. I will take the info you shared and go through our tree to make sure things line up correctly with your notes. And again, I appreciate the info. I hadn't had any collaborative info from any other descendants on these lines until now, so I'm saving your notes.
I had gotten a note from Geni.com regarding "inconsistencies" and was working on correcting the marriage order and children of David Marvel. This is not the only place that there has been confusion between Comfort (Prettyman) Marvel and Sarah Comfort (Prettyman) Marvel, because of the similarity of the names of his first and second wife. That's how I happened to run across your note. I've been doing some "indepth" research into the Marvel lineage -- it started with needing something to occupy time during the 2020 Covid Pandemic and then continued from there. And, of course, when you get to David Marvel that takes you into the Prettyman famly and, through his son, Prettyman, into the Rogers family.
Since your family is related to Thomas Prettyman II, you might like to go to Wikitree.com and go to the entry for Thomas Prettyman II. When you get there, you can click on the image in the upper left hand corner -- it just looks like a fuzzy blob but, when you click on it, you're taken to a larger, readable version of it. It's a Plat Map showing properties in Sussex County, Delaware. Because of the "Sheep Pen Branch" and because Thomas Marvel's land was bordered by Miery Branch, both of which can be located on a Delaware map, I've been able to locate it north and slghtly west of Millsborough, Delaware. Most of the names in that Plat Map are related by blood and/or marriage, including Thomas Prettyman II and three of his children (Robert, George, and Elizabeth), John Rogers (who married his daughter Comfort), David and Thomas Marvel (my relatives -- David married two different Prettyman cousins and Thomas married a Rodney), and the Rodneys and Joneses, who are related by marriage to each other and to others on thae map. All one big "happy" family.
The date can't be 1730 -- David Marvel didn't buy that particular pece of property until 1776 (my guess is that he and his brother Thomas, who added to his land, in that area, also in 1776) got a good deal on some land from people who left to go back to England when it looked like independence was going to be declared (they bought the land in March, several months before the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in July).
Since you mention that the Marvel line is a paternal cousin for your son, if you want to know any more about the Marvels, I'll be glad to share. You might already know that from David (1729-1796), or any of his brothers (Thomas, Philip, or Robert) you go back to his father Thomas (1682-1753) and then back to John Marvell (1632-1708; and, yes, spelled with two L's) who came from England to Virginia in 1652. Then the family can be traced back through a series of Thomases and Johns all the way to a Thomas born in 1474. We kind of get stuck there, and can't get back any farther. When I've been in Delaware, doing family research, and mention that I'm related to the Marvels and the Prettymans, I've been told, more than once, "Oh, you're related to a couple of the big names in Sussex County!". Of course, you can do your own digging into the Marvels through various internet sites (Geni.com, Wikitree.com, Ancestry.com, and others), but you'll run into some inconsistencies and errors. I can't say with 100% certainty that I've "corrected" everything in my own research, but I think I'm pretty close!
