JOHN GODDARD. The beginning of our branch of Goddards in America was kidnapped from England about 1745 and starts with John. The boys John and Joseph Goddard were bound out to a planter in Virginia. The first records, we have been told, were found, were land titles in Fauquir County, Virginia. John married there in Fauquir County it is thought to Mary McTier daughter of a French Protestant martyr named May McTier. John and Joseph Goddard when small boys living in a sea port town in England were taken aboard a ship ostensalby to be shown through it by the Captain. Their Step-mother brought them. After awhile they discovered the ship had left shore and their step-mother was gone. They cried to be allowed to return home and the captain whipped them.
After the ship landed in Virginia the boys were bound out. This must have been about 1745-1750. The boys never saw each other again.
The testimony of John Goddard in the Revolutionary War Pension papers of Joseph Powers, June 20, 1846, that he had always lived 3 miles from Joseph Powers and he was born in Loudown County Virginia, March 18, 1764 and came to Fleming County Kentucky in 1793. It would seem that John Goddard might have been bound out in Loudoan County Virginia. They probably traveled in a group, likely the emigrant train for which Ben J. Northcott was a hunter. At least three of these families married into the Goddard Family; Ringo, Glasscock and Northcott.
Loudoun County Virginia lays up the Potomac River from Washington D. C. northwest of Fairfax County . It is the Goddards and a body of their neighbors, who had land grand in Kentucky for the Revolutionary Services followed the tide of emigration westward, as far as possible. They settled on Mason County ( in that part later Fleming, on the Sand Lick branch of the Fox Creek, a branch of Licking River. A small town of Sandford was formed around the church that Joseph Goddard built and gave to them. At least three of them John Goddard Sr., John Goddard Jr., and Joseph Goddard owned land on Fox Creek and its branches between Sand Lick Creek and "old state Road to Virginia."
Joseph Goddard is said to be the first to be buried in the cemetery he gave, "so that anyone can have their six feet of ground free forever".
All but William, his eldest child was born there on the same farm and all but our line moved out of Kentucky before the Civil War, because of slavery. Abbott Goddard moved into Ohio, (Cincinnati area?) and then on to Indiana. Several moved to the vicinity of Vevey and Quercus Grove, Indiana.
John moved to Martinsburg or to Ruchville, Rush County, Indian where John Goddard built a church like the one his father built in Goddard, Kentucky.
The Goddards were very much against Slavery in any form. We often think it is because of our own background as indentured servants.
They campaigned very heavily during the years before and during the Civil War for freedom of all slaves. From Ohio and Indiana the Goddard clan went on to Illinois and other western states. Francis Portis Goddard and Abbott went from Indiana to Illinois. Francis Portis Goddard from Park County, Indiana to Knox and then to Warren County Illinois near Monmouth. His daughter Emily Goddard is our ancestries lived in Warren County after her marriage. Martha Anna Fletcher her daughter was born there. Emily married Josiah Fletcher.
Josiah and Emily Goddard had 1. Alfred Brooks Fletcher 2. Clarinda Fletcher, 3. Mary Jane Fletcher, 4. Oren Fletcher 5. Martha Anna Fletcher and 6. Laura Fletcher. Emily and Josiah Fletcher drowned in the Mississippi River.
See the story of Martha Anna Fletcher for more information about the family.
Came as bound servant on cotton plantation in Virginia with brother Joseph. Originally from England. Known for apple trees he planted wherever he lived from Virginia to Kentucky.
Birth Note: Conflicting dates - from 1730 to 1740 The immigrant of the Goddard family was John, an 8 year old boy who with his brother (Probably named James or Joseph) was tricked or kidnapped by his step-mother into visiting a ship bound for the colonie. She left them there and they were separated and sold indentured servants in VA. They never saw each other again. John was a planter and was affiliated with the Methodist church. REFN: 10
I removed Athaliah (Goddard) Roe-132, because of several reasons. 1. I can find no information on John and Mary Goddard living in Maryland where the profile of Roe-132 says she was born. 2. Athaliah's birth day year is the same as Martha (Goddard) Littleton's birth day 1767. 3. John Goddard wrote his will in 1819 and Athaliah name is not in his will. Athaliah died in 1820 in Fleming Co. and if she was his and Mary's daughter, she would be in his will. 4. The FAG profile is so incomplete and does not show any source for her to be their daughter. 5. I have have other papers on John and Mary Goddard which does not show anything about Athaliah.

Source: S117 "The Goddard Book", John and his brother lived in an unidentified seacoast town in England and were either shanghaied or put into a ship by an "evil" mother and came to America. No town is named.

Choosing Joseph S. Goddard and Mary Portis removed ALL of the consistency check alerts.

Is a curator available to check the profile and maybe refresh or lock some fields?

Thank you
