There ought to be little doubt that his correct first name is the biblical Eliezer. But my father, Sol Hopengarten, knew his Uncle Louie (the brother of Sol's father) very well and insisted to me, orally, that Louie was called, by Yiddish-speaking people, a name which sounded like "loozer". They were, of course, unaware that it would be an insult to be called, in English, "loser." So the name was Eliezer, pronounced "Eli oozer."
