Marshall was a nickname, so he is found in records as simply James Mullis. In the 1800 Anson Co. census James was age sixteen to twenty-five, a perfect match with the male age sixteen ten years earlier enumerated in the household of his mother Margaret Mullis in the 1790 Anson census. This means he was born no earlier than 1775 and was too young to have been the father of Jacob Mullis, Sarah Mullis Means, and William, all born between early and mid 1780s, when he was ten years and younger. In fact, Jacob's descendants in Indiana claim he was born in the Wilkes Co. N. C. branch of the family headed by George and Sarah Mullis. This would apply also to his sibling Sarah Mullis Means. Other individuals commonly attributed to him in online profiles, William and Solomon b. 1789 and 1795 were sons of his brothers Solomon and John "Jackson," not James "Marshall," who in the 1800 Anson census had only two children in his household, one male and one female, both ten years and younger. The author of MULLIS MELANGE gave him a birth ca. 1760 because she believed he was the father of Jacob and Sarah Mullis Means who were born in early 1780s. She was misaken.
