In running through some research on the coastal plains of the Southeastern part of the United States, I found various connections and groups that needed a common thread of the Southern Swamp as a protector and provider of persons seeking refuge from encroachment or enslavement. Additional persons or groups such as those working in the lumber industry may be attached. This is a work in progress with the following two projects set up so far:

https://www.geni.com/projects/The-Great-Dismal-Swamp-and-Its-People...

https://www.geni.com/projects/The-Green-Swamp-of-North-Carolina-and...

This is going to be a long process. If anyone has any ideas of additional "swamp environments," please let me know. I am working from lists from the Nature Conservancy etc. then looking for peoples or groups who have long established ties. An example is the Haitian colony that formed after the Haitian revolution in the Green Swamp of North Carolina. Also, please let me know if you are interested in participating. As someone who grew up across the road from a swamp in coastal South Carolina, it is a fascinating cultural study.
