Maria Barbara Loesch, youngest daughter of George Loesch (1699-1790) and Anna Christina Walborn, was born in 1744, not 1741 (baptismal records). This Maria Barbara married a man named Heinrich Schmid. After marrying in Pennsylvania, they migrated to North Carolina with two children and joined the Moravian Colony. Heinrich Schmid was either born in Germany or Pennsylvania, not North Carolina. He is clearly different from Major Henry Smith (1741-1835). Major Henry Smith and his wife were Lutherans, not Moravians. Even If Major Henry Smith married a woman named Maria Barbara Loesch/Lesh/Lash, she is NOT the daughter of George Losch. And if that is true, your "8 months is too close" problem disappears.
The Moravian Archive in North Carolina provides copious evidence that Heinrich Schmid is INDEED the same guy as Major Henry Smith. He was born in Pennsylvania. When Heinrich his wife and 2 children arrived as Moravians in North Carolina, he bought land in Bethania and organized a militia, prior to the breakout of the Revolutionary War. Moravians are pacifist, which explains why the family became Lutheran when the War broke out. Captain Schmid/Smith functioned as a sort of "protector" for the Moraviains. Both sides of the War suspected their alliances. After the War, the family settled in Cabarus, North Carolina, where there are church records of their children's baptisms.
