IMPORTANT RESEARCH THAT PROVES THAT THOMAS WYNNE WAS MARRIED TO MARTHA WINGFIELD, NOT MARTHA LLEWELLYN.

Lawsuit Wingfield vs Wingfield

Barlow) and Mary his wife, Thomas Dixon and Judith his wife, Richard Huson and Elizabeth his wife, Thomas Wynne and Martha his wife, Joel Wingfield, Joshua Wingfield, Martha Wingfield, and Peter Wingfield by Mary Wingfield their mother and protector which said Joshua, Martha and Peter are infants under the age of twenty one years and children of Edward Wingfield deceased and which said Edward Wingfield was and the said John Wingfield, Martha ??, Judith Dixon, Elizabeth Huson and Martha Wynne are the children of Gervas Wingfield late of this county deceased. That the said Gervas Wingfield being in his life time and at the time of his decease possessed a considerable personal estate consisting of sundry valuable slaves and other things departed this life on or about the ...... day of March one thousand seven hundred and fifty six Intestate leaving Hannah Wingfield his widow and relict and William Wingfield his oldest son and heir at law."

It continues ….

(The following is some research comments on Ancestry by a Wynne/Wingfield researcher)

Martha was the daughter of Jarvis Wingfield and Hannah (Wynne? Stith? Llewellyn? not certain but probably a relative to the Wynnes). Jarvis (1669-1756) was the son of William Wingfield who died 1676 in Charles City (today's Prince George County) and his wife a Miss Dix, daughter of Jarvis Dix (b. 1616, immigrated by 1636). Jarvis Wingfield was not a direct descendant of Edward Maria Wingfield first President of the Jamestown Colony, but probably was of the same family. He was wealthy and the father William left a 1676 will leaving property (which very unfortunately has been "lost"), and there was the tradition orally that the family was related. Genealogists on that side of the family are researching it, and dna evidence now being collected may help. Many in the family dropped the "g" and spelled the name Winfield...and there are MANY descendants throughout the South and beyond, Gen. Winfield Scott and many others included. ….

Now I understand it better from curator comments.

She had written:

Hannah Wingfield wife of Jarvis Wingfield is usually identified as the daughter of Thomas Wynne and Agnes Stith. BUT, if this is true, that means that Hannah's daughter Martha would've married her uncle, Thomas Wynne, Jr. (also a child of Thomas Wynne and Agnes Stith) -- not a legal possibility! In addition, Hannah was not listed as an heir in Thomas Wynne's will.”
