I agree this is a real mess. This is not my information, but I have to admit that I haven't really made an effort to upload much data into my own tree (I don't really have the time and to be honest I only set up this basic/free account in order to explore some material for a work-related research project), so I would not claim to be the person to manage or control any aspect of what is showing up on this website. I will go so far, however, to suggest that it looks to me as though someone is trying to merge two (at the very least) different, and as far as I know (unless DNA testing has indicated differently) unrelated Knox families into one, and in doing so has made quite a muddle of both. My ancestors were James and Elizabeth Craig Knox who settled in Chester Co., SC, and came from Ballymoney, County Antrim, Ireland. James Knox was born in Glasgow, Scotland (son of John and Agnes Johnstone Knox) and Elizabeth Craig Knox was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, daughter of John and Elizabeth Moir Craig. John Knox (father of James) was a burgess and guild brethren of Glasgow, while John Craig (father of Elizabeth) was a burgess and wright of Edinburgh. My research points in the direction of this Knox family being a cadet of the Knox of Silvieland family, while Agnes Johnstone's ancestors included a number of burgess and guild brethren of Glasgow. I have not been able to discover much about this Craig family, aside from the fact that John's father (James) was a farmer of Easthouses, Midlothian. Elizabeth Moir came from an Aberdeenshire family with links to the merchant/burgess class of that city.

Hope this helps.

Jeffrey, Like you I have not done a lot here. Most of what I loaded was a lifted from my wife's work on Ancestry.com. But about two years ago I finally found a family tree member who posted the tree back from a missing link I had been searching for, for years. My third great grandfather was John Knox who apparently died in Pickens County AL in 1849 when myfirst great grandfather John Daniel Knox was only 2 years old. His widow who remarried to a Richardson has a fantastic lineage that goes back to Jamestown (the Armisteads). But John Knox my 2nd Great was just an unknown. Because of Sherman's March to see there are no records in GA where he was born. So I jumoed on it when I saw this one member of my tree, a distant numbered cousin that had the tree all the way back to Scotland. I asked her to tell me where she got the information but she never answered. My wife's standards of proof are pretty high and she has not added this info to Ancestry. So I am not the one to be asking about the veracity of the info either. Sometimes its better not to comment because the ones that do have the time to do this get pretty snarky in telling you how worng you are,. HA!
