My gggrandfather was John Barkley. Story is that he survived the HMS Birkenhead sinking off Gansbaai in 1852, headed inland with a Seymour and Charles Daly. His daughter on her deathbed told her daughter that John Barkley's real name was O'Connor. As there was no John Barkley in the passenger list, and an O'Connor (Dennis) who was missing after the sinking, this is conceivable. There is no trace of Barkley in records prior to his marriage in 1853 to Johanna Elizabeth Keyzer. He was known as the founder of the town of Bloemhof, TVL. Daly family is known and are farming still in the Mafeking district. No trace of Seymour. On the baptism certificates of 5 of the 9 children born to John and Johanna, a James and Annie Barkley are given as witnesses. They are also untraceable at this time (Seymour?). We have records of all the descendants of John and Johanna. We know of Johanna's Keyzer family too. We are 5 descendants of John from different children all working on this - but we are unable to go back any further in time for John Barkley. Is anyone able to assist with this family, or Seymour for that matter please?
