The Hembree's who settled in Spartanburg SC are descendant's of Henry Embrie a Planter from England who settled along the Charles River shire on the southern Peninsula of Virginia Colony.
Source; John Hotten's Passengers List to America pages 95-96 Henry Embrie age 20 arrived in Virginia Colony on the ship America that departed from Gravesend England with 88 other passengers June 23, 1635.
I believe him to be the ancestor of the Hembree's of SC who are known to have Native American ancestry according to Larry Petrisky.but wrong!!!
The Embry's also spelled their name's Hembree William Embry 1745-1820 the son of William Embry & Elizabeth Allen the grandson of Col Henry Embry removed to Chester Co. SC and signed a deed dated 1784 to Jane Fowler as "Hembree"
In the book Evolution of the Southern Back Country/A Case Study of Lunenburg County Virginia 1746-1832 mentions a nephew of Henry Embry, William Embry who came from Charles City sometime before 1740.
William Byrd II of Westover (plantation Charles City) mentioned Col Henry Embry in his manuscripts also John Bolling the son of Col. Robert Boling whose Plantation was located on the Appomattox River in Charles City.
The Hembree's who settled in South Carolina were cousins the ones mentioned who had Native American ancestry were the grandchildren of Robert Hembree & Elizabeth Bolling daughter of Mary Pettis a Doeg Indian consort to Col Robert Bolling & William Bolling.
Shawnee Heritage by Don Green (This is a Oral History!) Robert Embry married Elizabeth Bolling the daughter of William Bolling and Mary aka Pettus a Doeg Indian kidnapped at age &11 with her mother near Port Tobacco during the 1666 War against to Doeg Indians. Mary was sold to Col Robert Bolling and served as him as his concubine and was the wet nurse for John Bolling the infant son of Col. Robert Bolling & Jane Rolf grand daughter of Pocahontas who died following child birth. Mary Pettus had four half blood children with Col. Robert Bolling. After marriage to his second with Anne Stith she made him send Mary away to relative William Bolling and had three more half blood children. Mary Pettus and her children were given their freedom after the death of William Bolling.
This must have some truth the descendants of Rosanna Hembree the daughter of James N. Hembree & Nancy Petty tested for Native American Ancestry that was 5%. Rosanna Hembree married Larkin Baker the son of Baxter Baker of Halifax (that was once part of Lunenburg Va) The Baker DNA study matched this Baker Family with Andrew Baker & Mary Bolling the daughter of Col Robert Bolling & Anne Stith.
