Biography
Jacob may be the son of Johnannes Jacob and Anna (Merrill) Deckert.
He may have married twice:

Mary Elizabeth Vance
Elizabeth Pierson
Jacob was a construction worker in the Northwest Territory and helped build Fort Jefferson in April 1780 at the juncture of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Around mid 1781, Jacob helped build boats on the Ohio River near present day Jeffersonville, Indiana. He might have been a soldier in the American Revolution.

A memorial was added 11 January 2023 for a wife of Johannes named Elizabeth https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/248295532/mary_elizabeth_deckard is attached as mother of Jesse Wesley Deckard 1813- 1887 but is likely in error:
Mary Elizabeth Pearson Deckard BIRTH 1808 Tennessee, USA
DEATH 1898 (aged 89–90) Guthrie, Lawrence County, Indiana, USA
Burial Details Unknown
MEMORIAL ID 248295532

There are TWO Find-A-Grave memorials to Rev Jacob Deckard, Sr.
Find-A-Grave memoriall #43305704, written by Sanders, is comparatively short. Find-A-Grave memorial #65270621, posted by WDK, consists of a fifteen page essay written by Ronald E. Deckard, who provides exhaustive documentation for his claims.

Anyone using the Find-A-Grave documentation should take particular care to get the right wife if they wish to cite her as the mother of Rev. Johannes Jacob Deckard II's children. Within the body of text, Find-A-Grave cites Mary Elizabeth Vance as his wife, and this woman was the mother of his children.

However Find-A-Grave gives only a SINGLE link to a spouse, and that single link is to Sara Elizabeth Kinser Deckard. [THIS IS NO LONGER THE CASE--- accessed 27 March 2024]
This woman was married to Rev. Deckard in old age, and she bore NONE of his children. ALL of HER fourteen children were the product of a union with a different man. [THIS also appears to be in error as Sarah Elizabeth Deckard (Kinser) Sarah Kinser is his DAUGHTER-IN-LAW]

Johannes Jacob I, Deckert accompanied his 3 sons to America around 1775-76 arriving in New York but settling in Essex County, New Jersey. He must have tired of his name being pronounced as Decker becaused he dropped the "t" from his name in America. It is said that he helped other immigrants get settled in America. Eventually he settled in the Southwestern part of the State of Virginia, in what is now Wythe County which was constituted about 1790. The Deckard Family had all left Wythe County by about 1830 to 1832 and settled in Monroe Co., Indiana. Then principally to surrounding counties in Indiana of Lawrence, Brown, Green, Sullivan, and to state of Missouri. About 1900's they were spreading thru Arkansas and then into Oklahoma.
