This is my connection shown to him, and as 17th Great grandfather. I am a Burress biologically. My father was adopted by Hawk family when he was 6 yrs. old and when following DNA and matches, I try to make people aware of this in case they are wandering about surnames. I did see a connection of a possible marriage back into the Crusaders history regarding a King of Jerusalem who was Bures and married a woman by the name Brus? I need to research a bit more regarding it all. I do have the documents from the list of marriages and Kings of Jerusalem, who were some of the Crusaders during the years of @1100 AD and so on. If anyone has gotten this far back or any known history on my info would be greatly appreciated to find out about if possiable?? Thanks all! Joseph Raymond Burke I think your question was how could you be related to Robert the Bruce in two different ways. I think it depends on which line you are following. It looks like you have at least two lines. With so many generations in between it's not surprising. In my case, a few years ago, Robert was my 19th gr grandfather and now Geni says that Robert the Bruce is my 24th great grandfather. Over on WikiTree he is my second cousin 22 times removed. The only way to know for sure is research each person in the lineage. I tried that when he was my "19th" grandfather and some of the generations didn't match. I'm gonna try the "24th" grandfather line now and see how that works out. Researching back to the 12 and 1300's is not an easy task.

Hi Joseph, my family is connected to many Kings in about 7-8 different ways because, during that time many fathers basically sold their daughters and their daughters children was to keep peace between country's and governments. This is where the connection splits off again and you become connected to the Grandmothers or Grandfathers side of her family thus connecting you through this other family and members. Personal opinion but these splits happened after conquering countries and of course some believed since they were blood relatives it enveloped to a larger reason to marry within the blood giving way to "Their God given right" to Lord over the people. Please don't take my opinion as how it was it is only my view on the many connections. I'm sure some historian can give you a view to better understand this. It is the only way I can view it after all my research back to 1500bc and beyond. Don't let it confuse you, just acknowledge the fact your connection will produce several different bloodlines or connections that are not through bloodlines. I always follow the straight bloodline. Best Wishes and Happy Holidays
Mary

I am related to a great deal of people multiple times. Most of them being royals of ancient history. There are a handful closer than that. Regardless if you branch into any real lineage that’s more than likely going to happen.
Not only is Robert the Bruce my great grandfather twice. There are a number of his great grandfather‘s that are great grandfathers of mine multiple times as well.

Robert I the Bruce, King of Scots is my 22nd great grandfather. I was unaware that I may be related to him in more than one way. How & by what method do others find this out about their great grandparents? Just a novice - & just wondering...

I notice there are a few different lines which would explain the two degrees through which you are related. I was similarly intrigued when researching my connection to Queen Elizabeth II. She is my 16th cousin through her mother: the Bowes-Lyon side. Through her Father King George VI she is my 26th cousin.

Robert I the Bruce is my 6th cousin 23 times removed

Hello.
Oh yes - I know Robety the Bruce is my uncle - and Isobel - his sister my aunt.

Question: I'm wondering how it's possible that Robert I the Bruce, King of Scots was at one time listed as a great-grandfather of mine - but, is no longer. - - - Robert de Brus, 5th Lord of Annandale is my 24th great-grandfather (Robert I's grandfather). - - - What happened to cut that name out? - - - Any help at all is appreciated.

I am not an administrator on this site. I did join about 2010. But, there are times where another person seems to be able to add something to the main world tree that adds to my tree that creates changes to my tree. And it is almost impossible to erase these. Look at your tree closely and if you find an error you can post ON YOUR SITE what you think is incorrect. I have been unable to have mine corrected for years.I do not use this site much. I am on Ancestry. Patrick prpm2@verizon.net

I have observed this also but have a different take on it. Yours is a question that pops up with some regularity.
Just a user here on Geni - but been around a while - poking about.
Here's what I think I know.
Anytime you get past the immediate relatives in your tree that you are certain of ....... official documents, DNA, old proven lineage books (some have been proven false), Bibles, etc. -it is likely that some/many of your lines are/can be in flux. Why?
Because every single day there are countless of folks here on Geni "working on" updating memorials. Some are more nailed down than others i.e. Master Profiles - & managed by Geni Curators, Others are literally just guesses or based on "family lore" - "false pedigrees", etc.
Everytime a breakthrough is made or what is already there is proven incorrect, Geni's memorials & their connections to others are updated which inevitably shifts lines of descendancy for some. Keep in mind that Geni is partially for entertainment. None of us can really prove our ABSOLUTE descendancy from famous/piwerful folks of antiquity. Correction - The Royals seem to have their lineages "cut in stone." Having said that there's stuff like this too ..... https://www.cnn.com/2013/02/03/world/europe/richard-iii-search-anno...
Hope my thoughts are well received.
Keep diggin' Nancy (wave)

*incorrect/correct with proper documentation

Some modern, well heeled people CAN pay to have accurate genealogies done (linking themselves to fancy folks in history) but I am not in that select group.
Back in "the day" only The Royals and others with similar power could do so. Now, here we are gaining access to a tremendous resource. Love it!
Geni World Tree = Woo Hoo!

I would take issue with a Genealogy site that we pay a subscription for being in part for entertainment purposes. Going by your logic that "none of us can really prove our ABSOLUTE descendancy" then I assume the same argument can be made that other well known genealogy sites are for partial entertainment? It surely can't be the intention.

Thank-you for your words Lynda.
I will attempt to clarify.
Unless you have absolute documentation - i.e. in the case of very powerful lines of antiquity, & a select few who are able to pay for a professional genealogist, we simply cannot go around saying that we descend from this fellow/lady or that fellow/lady. Even those with pedigrees that allow them titles as nobles & Royals - can at times turn up to be "imposters". That is why I posted the link for Richard above. We cannot with absolute certainty say that our DNA matches the paper trail exactly when it is that far back in history. I know very little about the science of DNA but have observed talk concerning certain groups, etc. So, scientists are nailing it down on some levels. For example it is fairly easy to identify whether or not one hails from one major large group or another. This helps narrow down where we do not fit into history.
So, (imho) Geni, FindAGrave, Ancestry, Family Search, My Heritage, Newspapers, etc are all helping us create our documented foundation. This we can be sure of. After that (lets just say 5-6 generations back) "proving" our lines of descendancy gets more involved/difficult.
Can anyone actually say "I am certain that every woman in my family line leading to this/that
progenitor was "as pure as the driven snow"? Probably not. There may be a mishap in there somewhere?
I never really thought about what "the intention" of these companies was. Good question. Other than the obvious one - to make money. I am a middle aged American housewife with a passion for the English language & world History. I find it so entertaining.
One last thought is this - science & law enforcement have now combined the use of DNA
with our family tree data. it can be used to solve cold case files & reverse triangulation of our genetic matches is a way to identify suspects. Have you checked out the work of genetic geneaologist Ce Ce Moore?
Thank-you again for conversing with me Lynda. I'm on early spring lambing duty. Lots of waiting coupled with big drama. :)

"I am certain that every woman in my family line leading to this/that progenitor was as pure as the driven snow?"
Sorry, mixed that up.
