My Fugate line on Geni got cut at some point a good while back. I don't remember when or why.

Anyway, I have many Fugate DNA matching cousins on Ancestry. And this evening I came across a new Fugate-descendant DNA match who Ancestry shows as my 5th-8th cousin and the only matching line in his tree to me is the Fugate line.

The reason I have Fugate DNA cousins is because I have this Mary (Jarratt) Clopton as the daughter of Robert Jarratt II and his wife Ann Fugate. I've always had them connected that way, and my DNA matches bear it out. I have several ThruLines connections that go back to Peter Fugate and his wife Frances Mould as our common ancestors.

Those connections are the only way I'd have proven DNA-matching Fugate cousins. I trust the DNA more than I do what some trees show, such as how they're connected here on Geni.

I have DNA matches with descendants of James Fugate who married Anne Hooper. He was also a son of Peter and Frances.

And I have DNA matches with descendants of Capt. Josias Fugate who married Mary Martin. Another son of Peter and Frances.

The common ancestry always goes back to Peter and Frances.

I have a total of 8 DNA 5th-8th cousins just on Ancestry with the surname Fugate. And MANY more with the surname in their trees - more 4th-8th cousins with Fugate ancestry than I can get into a screenshot or even want to try to count. And Fugate isn't a common name like Smith or Jones. So it's unlikely given my other connections that my connections to these is from some other Fugate family.

Even on the ones that show a common ancestry for our match but that doesn't go back enough generations to show Fugate, it goes the exact route it should to go to my Fugate; i.e., up my Ainsworth line:

Ann (Fugate) Jarratt
mother of
Mary (Jarratt) Clopton
mother of
Elizabeth (Clopton) Ballard
mother of Martha (Ballard) Finch
mother of Sarah (Finch) Ainsworth

So all those many Fugate cousins on Ancestry may not show back to Fugate in ThruLines because they're too far back (since Ancestry only does ThruLines thru the 5th grandparents), they do show straight to Elizabeth (Clopton) Ballard, my 5th great-grandmother but they're up to my 8th cousins because of the Fugate common ancestry just two generations back to Ann (Fugate) Jarratt.

So, with all those Fugate-descendant cousins showing up in my matches, it's frustrating that my lines aren't connected on Geni.

Ann Fugate 'should' be connected as my direct ancestor, based on the DNA evidence.

As we all know, tree info can be incorrect and sites used to validate the changes in connections may have errors. DNA is never wrong.

Just sharing this in case someone wants to trust the DNA results on this, as I do, and reconnect them so I'm connected on Geni to my Fugate ancestry.

Consistency Check:
Robert Clopton born after the death of his mother Mary Clopton (Jarratt).Margaret Bristow (Clopton) born after the death of her mother Mary Clopton (Jarratt).Richard Clopton born after the death of his mother Mary Clopton (Jarratt).Devereaux Clopton, Jr. born after the death of his mother Mary Clopton (Jarratt).Benjamin Clopton born after the death of his mother Mary Clopton (Jarratt).Naomi Clopton born after the death of her mother Mary Clopton (Jarratt).

You need to lay out for me, by Geni profile, what you are asking for.

Right now I think you are saying:

Mary (Jarratt) Clopton b 1695 Mary Clopton

Daughter of

Robert Jarratt Sr abt 1625 Robert Jarratt, Sr.

Should have a mother

Ann Fugate b abt 1680 Ann Fugate

Instead of “Mary of Ireland” b abt 1660 Mary Jarrett

Is that it? Because I don’t see how Robert Jarrat Jr b 1698 could do it.

And, where do you see this that others can inspect?

I totally hear you about Fugate DNA, it is well studied. So I am not doubting your connection. But we have to tie it to a tree in a coherent way that has at some paper support.:)

Thanks.

And, is that Ann Fugate the only possible Fugate? Surely there were other Fugate women? Same question on the Jarratt side.

Linking the maternal line you described by profile, going up the tree
(By the way, this is now an interesting question, a maternal lineage)

Sarah Finch Sarah Ainsworth b abt 1780 Sarah Ainsworth (fudgy birth date)

Daughter of

Martha Ballard b 1749 Martha Finch

Daughter of

Elizabeth Clopton b. 1718 Elizabeth Ballard

Daughter of

Mary Jarrat b abt 1695 Mary Clopton

So we have an MT DNA haplogroup?

Erica, you're referring to a post from 2021. That's all totally cold on my mind at this point. I've either already resolved it to my satisfaction and/or moved on from it at this point.

I don't have an mtDNA haplogroup for my Sarah Finch (paternal ancestor for me) but I do have DNA matches in my Ancestry ThruLines and under the Geni DNA tabs on various profiles connecting to her parents and on back up the Ballard and Clopton lines to Mary Jarratt and Walter Clopton. My ThruLines shows this for Elizabeth (Clopton) Ballard:

ThruLines® uses Ancestry® trees to suggest that you may be related to 80 DNA matches through Elizabeth Clopton.

and this for her husband William Ballard:

ThruLines® uses Ancestry® trees to suggest that you may be related to 80 DNA matches through William Ballard.

Then on Geni, you'll find me listed as an atDNA 6th great-granddaughter of William's father William Clopton I based on the atDNA info Geni pulls from FTDNA. One of my close cousins Mary Helen (Jernigan) Simpson also shows there.

And under the DNA tab of William Ballard I and his wife Mary Jarratt I also show as a 6th great-granddaughter based on the atDNA results pulled from FTNDA, as does again my cousin Mary Helen (Jernigan) Simpson. I grew up with Helen (she didn't go by Mary)'s sister Rachel Jernigan. We were in the same class. Both the sisters have passed and Helen's DNA is managed by her daughter Debra who I've collaborated with in past years.

So I don't have any questions about the connections for my Sarah Finch. I'm just uncertain about how the other Sarah Finch referenced fits in.

I joined the Finch group on Facebook for a while in an effort to find more about the 'other' Sarah since I have DNA matches to descendants of Leonard Finch I who the FB group is about his descendants. No one had any additional info on that Sarah. They have to all be closely related 'somehow' though because I have DNA matches with other descendants my Sarah, the other Sarah, as well as the brother Leonard.

I've been working on a project for the past few days and have too many open tabs already, so I'm unable to open and view anything other than those until I work through them and close some out and my laptop isn't running so sluggishly for having too much opened.. So not going to be able to be of further help on this at this time.

No worries, Debbie Gambrell

I see what happened. Cynthia revived the discussion with an inconsistency report. So I focused on the part of thread that interested me. :).

(If I worked on resolving every inconsistency I see, I’d be living quite a while longer than al hope to.)

The only mtDNA designation I have seen on these lines is on the maternal line of Walter Clopton I showing on Geni as H1ch

Erica, I hear you on the inconsistency issue. It would be nice if people resolved them as they added things that made them pop up, but oh well...

:D
In the area and saw the inconsistencies and then the existing discussion and decided to piggyback
I have not enough hours in the day lol
I thought since the original post had no response that perhaps would be just as well to park the report….
Also, I have some Fugate cousins in my dna matches at Ancestry and are both sides.
I know I worked on some quite a while back…
Unfortunately I have too many brick walls to focus ugh….
I do wonder what is typical? Especially for someone who has been doing this as long as I have?
