Thanks Greg for the quick reply. My guess is, as it so often happens, that someone erroneously entered the name Black and the name has simply been copied without any research or documentation. I am keeping her name as Lucy Fennell in my records.
Lucy Fennell/Thomas Cleverly Dare are my 5th great grandparents. My paternal grandfather, Oscar Reynolds attended grade school in Dareville, Jefferson County, IL and later was a teacher at the same school.
Good Luck with your research!!

Greg,
Additionally, Roland C. Dare, (son of Thomas Cleverly Dare/Lucy Fennell ) had a brother named Hubbard Dare and a son named Hubbard! I think you may show Thomas’ son as Hubbard Black. But Hubbard’s last name is definitely Dare.
The Dares were quite prominent in Jefferson Co, IL.
Roland’s son Hubbard married Mary Margaret Martin. This Hubbard and his wife operated the first store that was in Dareville, Jefferson County, IL.
Roland has only one daughter named Elizabeth who married an Arendale. Geni.com shows Roland had a dau Elizabeth who married an Arendale and another dau who name is spelled Elisabeth. Roland had only daughter – my spelling is Elisabeth – who married John Blackwell Arendale.
I think geni.com also has a mistake in the name Roland C. Dare, SR. There was NO Roland C. Dare JR.
Roland also had another dau that is not listed at geni. Her name was Lucy Ann Dare and she married a man named William Holloway – they were from St. Carolina. Following the death of Wm Holloway, Lucy Holloway migrated to Jefferson County, IL with her son John, her dau Detha Holloway Mathus, and her BROTHER Hubbard Dare (son of Roland C. Dare).
You can access Roland C. Dare via my family tree “Reynolds of Southern Illinois” on ancestry.com at

I cannot figure out how these Blacks fit in with the Dares. Roland C. Dare did have a dau, Mirah Ann Dare, who married Samuel Allen Black. Samuel/Mirah are my paternal great, great grandparents and they both died early 1900s in Jefferson Co, IL. But I cannot figure out who this Catherine Black and Polly Black are.

2/6/2022 -- OOPS! Just noticed a mistake I made in the post 1/9/2022 wherein I stated in last paragraph that Samuel Allen Black/Mirah Dare are my paternal great grandparents. They are actually my paternal great grand uncle/aunt! Sorry for the mistake. Mirah's parents, Roland Dare/Elinor Cryer are my 4th great grandparents.
More information on the "Black" name as it relates to the Dare family. Mirah Dare, dau of Roland C. Dare/Elinor Cryer married Samuel Allen Black, the son of John/Rhoda Black of Jefferson County, IL. Samuel/Mirah had a son Stinson Hubbard Black 1855-1883. This makes me think some researchers have mistakenly placed this Stinson "Hubbard" Black as a son of Thomas Cleverly Dare/Lucy Fennell. Samuel/Mirah had no children named "Polly" or "Catherine".
John/Rhoda Black had only 2 sons -the aformentioned Samuel and Robert Calloway Black, SR. and 2 daus: Louisa who married 1st James Jones and 2nd Abner Hicks. John/Rhoda's other dau was Perlina who married a Moses Black Atkins.
I am fairly sure of the accuracy of the following statement: Thomas Cleverly Dare/Lucy Fennell had 4 surviving children. I have only been able to document 2 of them: Roland C. Dare 1772-1861 (married Elinor Cyer) and Hubbard Roland Dare1787-1853 (married Mary Dovers or Downers). As of this date, I cannot ascertain the names of the other 2 children of Thomas Cleverly Dare/Lucy Fennell.
In all my research, I cannot determine how the name "Black" fits in to Lucy Fennell, and I cannot determine that she had children named Catherine Black, Polly Black and Jane W. Ross. And why are researchers on this website (geni.com) giving them the last name of "Black" instead of "Dare"???
Stinson Hubbard Black, (son of Samuel Allen Black/Mirah Ann Dare) had a dau Diantha Catherine Black 1875-1880. So this "Catherine Black" would be the GRANDDAUGHTER OF Samuel Allen Black/MIrah Ann Dare, GREAT GRANDDAUGHTER of Roland Dare/Elinor Cryer and GREAT, GREAT GRANDAUGHTER of Thomas Cleverly Dare/Lucy Fennell.
Maybe the researchers just have the generations "mixed up". I still cant figure out how "Lucy Black" is an alias for "Lucy Fennell" nor can I figure out where this Jane W. Ross and Polly Black fit in as a children of Thomas Cleverly Dare/Lucy Fennell - unless they are the 2 "unknown" children I speak of. But where did researchers come up with these names? I have been unable to find them anywhere else except on this website.
