Until the anniversary of the arrival of the regiment (said anniversary took place in 2015) It was assumed that François Chagnon dit Larose was a soldier in the La Fredière company of the regiment. There is a page in the Drouin dictionary devoted to François that explicitely states he was a member. HOWEVER, the historian Marcel Fournier and his co-author Michel Langlois have brought that into dispute. Fournier-Langlois published a book in which they propose a set of criteria by which we can decide whether an ancestor was or was not in the regiment. They cite François specifically as a case in which there is not enough evidence for inclusion. The principal objection to his inclusion is a total absence of documentation in which it is explicitely stated that he was a member. (In practically all other aspects he fits the bill).

My own opinion (unsupported by evidence) is that François was most probably a soldier in that illustrious regiment. His first appearance in the archives coincides with the arrival of the regiment (1666). He was of approximately the right age (22). He settled in Verchères near or at the invitation of one of the officers who became a seigneur, Monsieur de Jarret. (census of 1681).

So.. was he a sodier of the Good Regiment... or not?
