Huida Shenker says of Richard Pierce, Snr. SV/PROG I noticed that Richard Pierce Snr occupation was a Banker". Is it possible that he may have been a "Baker" and was the surname perhaps Peirce before.

This seems to be where I got the info:

“Another of Minna - the Grosvenor castaway's - daughters married ‘Piarse’ or Pierce. The Pierces first arrived in SA as 1820 settlers aboard La Belle Alliance. Richard Pierce, a 41 year old banker, his wife Ann, and 3 sons were members of Wilson’s party. The eldest son, Dick, who was then 11, grew up to marry a woman of ‘Cape Malay Origin’ – the daughter (name unknown) of the castaway Minna and Damin the runaway slave. The other two sons were Paul Pierce, aged 10, & Joseph Pierce, aged 9.

Is there a reason to think she's wrong?

Huida Shenker replies - I came across this reference on MyHeritage from Hazel Dakers:

The marriage record of Richard Pierce and Janetje Tidon may indicate who Catherine Pierce, Richard Pierce daughter Mother may have been. Other searces of Tidon's marrying in the same geographical area points to people carrying the surname of Tidon being of multiple heritages.

I further noted that on Catherine Pierce death notice on FamilySearch, her Father is referred to as "Polly Pierce". I have come across Richard Pierce Junior as Richard Dick Pierce, but not Polly. Perhaps Frank Green (the reporter of Catherine's passing) wanted to enter Polly Pierce as her Mother?

Please let me know if your research can shed further light on this for us.

Huida Shenker I think you know more than I do about this profile. I've sent you a management request - please go ahead and update: especially the primary documents you have found.

Also from Huia: I came across this reference where Richard Pierce Senior' occupation is mentioned as a "Baker" with spouse Ann, sons Richard, Paul, Joseph and daughter Mary.

If he was a Baker, I am wondering if the death notice of Richard Peirce Senior, "South Africa, Cape Province, Probate Records of the Master of the High Court, 1834-1989", database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QP7Q-6BM2 : 27 April 2020), Richard Peirce, 1869-1871, is the death notice of Richard Pierce Senior above.

Also, a marriage record of Richard Pierce Junior on FamilySearch:

"South Africa, Civil Marriage Records, 1840-1973", database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6ZHB-PJ1F : 27 January 2022), Richard Pierce, 1840.
