Dan Robirds Notes on James David Robirds
Posted 13 Apr 2018 by gaylen44f
E-mail sent to me from Dan, when I asked him about James David "Jimmy" Robbirds parents after Ladana Mashburn(my ex- sister in law Henry's sister) kept telling me that I had the wrong parent attached to Jimmy and that the last name wasn't Robbirds. I have proved that names was Robirds, Robbirds and Roberts in this lineage. Thank you Dan for contacting me with this information.

Peggy,
My grandfather and Jimmy would have been second cousins.
Off the top of my head -
Jimmy's great-grandparents were William Roberts and Ann Vandergriff (my 4g-grandparents). They were both born near modern day Raleigh, North Carolina but married in 1784 Wilkes Co, NC after William served in the Revolutionary War. They follwed her parents through eastern Tennessee, ending up outside of modern day Chattanooga in the early 1830s. Their son William A. Roberts-Robbirds married Jane Bunch, and they had three children - William Mattison Roberts-Robbirds-Robirds (my 2g-grandfather), James David Roberts-Robbirds (Jimmy's grandfather) and Eliza Jane. Roberts Mill Road in Falling Water, Tennessee (just outside Chattanooga) is named after the family. ABout 1842, most of them moved to SW Missouri where William died. William A. and Jane ended up in Texas County, Missouri outside of Cabool. James David (who went by Dave or Davey) married Nancy Jane Bell. During the Civil War, both Davey and Billy fought in the Battle of Wilsons Creek for the Missouri State Guard, where both were wounded. My 2g-grandfather Billy went to Texas for a while, where he spent some time with his uncle David Bunch (whose first wife was Lucy Roberts, Billy and Davey's first cousin).
Davey stayed at home, hiding during the day. Southern Missouri was the last place you wanted to be during the war, because each side had roving bands of guerillas terrorizing and often killing anyone who might not think the same way. Davey and Billy's father William A. was killed by horse thieves at some point in this era. Davey was captured at home, and is supposed to have spent 18 months in prison. Jane and Nancy took his family (apparently with one of Nancy's brothers) to outside Lead Hill, Boone County, Arkansas where Davey later joined them. Jimmy's parents were William Harrison (Robbirds or Robirds?) and Dora Rozell. My family ended up wandering away from Texas County, and many ended up in Ozark County (where my grandfather was born) or adjacent counties. The families went beack and forth over the White River that separates Missouri and Arkansas.
The story I have is that Jimmy drowned crossing Elbo Creek when it was at flood near the White River, before his twin girls were born. I don't know where Jimmy was buried. There is a Robbirds Cemetery on private land that I haven't been to, but Jane, Davey and Nancy are buried at Raley Cemetery, Boone County, Arkansas.
I grew up in southern California, but have lived all over the west and in NE Oregon for the last 6 years. I just found out I have to get to California to work on a dead diesel locomotive, but it is on the way to my Mom's for Thanksgiving. By coincidence, one of Jimmy's nieces lives in the same town as my Mom. I have met Evelyn before, and we are planning on visiting while I am down there.
More later when I get back. I can scan parts of a book on the family written in the late 1950s if there is interest.

It would seem that all of us researching this family line were mostly right, but a little bit wrong (including me). After a couple days of rewriting, here is my latest version on parts of the Bunch family, based on current information. There are no doubt errors, and “official” records often conflict or are just wrong – often requiring an educated conclusion based on the available evidence. Thanks to all the cousins and researchers for sharing their information.
Starting with David Bunch:
His first wife was apparently Lucy Roberts, and he is listed in 1840 District 2, Hamilton County, Tennessee between Jacob Roberts (Lucy’s father) and Joseph Roberts (unidentified), with his sister Jane Bunch listed a few lines before (as the wife of Jacob’s brother William (A.) Roberts (Robbirds) – my 3g-grandparents). About 1843, David Bunch and Joseph Roberts apparently followed John Howeth to Rusk County, where they joined John’s brother Thomas Howeth and sons who obtained land grants there in 1840. All are listed in the 1846 Republic of Texas voter list for Rusk County, and 1848 tax list. David Bunch and John Howeth have not been located in the 1850 census. By 1852, David Bunch and most of the Howeths were in Grayson County (per tax lists and land sales), though the Howeths soon moved next door to Cooke County.
1860 Census – Sherman, Grayson County, Texas:
David Bunch 48 1812 Tennessee
Ellenor Bunch 38 1822 Tennessee
Melinda Bunch 18 1842 Tennessee
Wm W Bunch 15 1845 Texas
Archey H Bunch 12 1848 Texas
Isaac Bunch 10 1850 Texas
Sarah Blue 15 1845 Texas
Ema Blue 11 1849 Texas
Lucinda Blue 7 1853 Texas
Saul Blue 4 1856 Texas (Suel Bunch!)
David Blue 2 1858 Texas (David Jesse Bunch!)
Catherine Bunch 21 1839 Tennessee
David’s oldest daughters with Lucy Roberts (Elizabeth Jane and Mary Ann) are not listed because they are already married. David’s last wife is Elender Kays, the widow of Meredith Blue who died by early 1855 (per probate record). Elender is known to be David Jesse’s and Asa’s (b~1863) mother (per her sister’s will stating she was already married to a Mr. Bunch before David Jesse was born). The mother of David’s other children is not yet clear. This census shows that William W. and Archey H. were the sons of David Bunch.
In June of 1864, it appears David and Elender Bunch sold the majority of their land in Grayson County (over the years, David had acquired several parcels totaling several hundred acres). By the 1870 census, they are found in Arkansas with their younger children.
1870 census – Monroe, Sevier Co, Arkansas:
David Bunch 58 1812 Tennessee
Elender Bunch 48 1822 Kentucky
Elizabeth Bunch 16 1854 Texas (unidentified)
Suel Bunch 13 1857 Texas
David Bunch 11 1859 Texas
Asa Bunch 7 1863 Texas
The 1870 census finds daughter Malinda in Cooke County, Texas; in the household of William Howeth, who is listed next to his uncle John Howeth. Malinda later married in Grayson County. Isaac had married Willie King in Polk County, Arkansas in 1869. For reasons still unknown, Archey H. and William W. Bunch both married in Van Zandt County. (Did David Bunch relocate to Van Zandt County in the mid-1860s before moving to Arkansas?)
Synthia C. Price married A.C. Bunch on 24 Dec 1865 in Van Zandt County
Nancy Price married William Bunch on 21 Nov 1866 in Van Zandt County
Susana Price married Thomas Benton on 3 Jan 1869 in Van Zandt County
The 1850 census for Van Zandt County shows J.W. Price (Josiah) age 33 and wife; including daughters Nancy age 9 (~1841 LA), Susan age 5 (~1845 AR), and Syntha age 3 (~1847 AR).
1870 census (Nov. 7): McComb PO, Grayson County, Texas
Archy Bunch 23 1847 Texas laborer
Cicy Bunch 20 1850 Arkansas
Eliza Bunch 4 1846 Texas
Henry Bunch 2 1858 Texas
Wm. Bunch 25 1845 Texas laborer
Nanny Bunch 25 1845 Louisiana
Laborn Bunch 3 1867 Texas
Margret Bunch 2 1868 Texas
Joseph Bunch 6/12 1870 Texas (Josiah, after his maternal grandfather)
By 1880, things had substantially changed for both Archey and William’s families. For Archey:
1880 Census: Navarro County, Texas
Thomas Benton 36 1844 MO/TN/TN farmer
Susanna Benton wife 34 1846 LA/LA/unk
Elijah G? Benton son 9 1871 TX/MO/LA
Nora B. Benton dau 6 1874 TX/MO/LA
Jesse Benton son 4 1976 TX/MO/LA
Susan Benton dau 1 1879 TX/MO/LA
Henry Bunch nephew 11 1869 TX/TX/LA works on farm
1880 Census: Van Zandt County, Texas
Peter Kuykendoll 34 1846 TN/TN/TN farmer
Syntha A. Kuykendoll wife 29 1851 LA/GA/LA
James W. Kuykendoll son 13 1867 TX/TN/TN
Thos. M. Kuykendoll son 9 1871 TX/TN/TN
Mary E. Kuykendoll dau 7 1873 TX/TN/TN
Indian Bunch dau 7 1873 TX/TX/TX
M.E. Kuykendoll dau 4 1876 TX/TN/TX
W.J. Kuykendoll son 2 1878 TX/TN/TX
S.F. Kuykendoll dau 5/12 1880 TX/TN/TX
Eliza J. Bunch step-dau 13 1867 AR/TN/TX
Wm. Murray laborer 30 1850 AR/KY/MS
A family story is that Archey Bunch died from a snakebite about 1857. Records show Mrs. J.A.E. Bunch married P.E. Kuykendall on 23 July 1875 in Van Zandt County, and is confirmed by the above census. Peter Kuykendall’s previous wife was the mother of the children born before 1875, and “Syntha” would be the mother of the youngest three Kuykendall children. But there is a question as to who Peter Kuykendall really married.
Ginsey E. Gammon married A. H. Bunch on 26 May 1872 in Van Zandt County. Apparently Cynthia C. Price died by early 1872 and Archey remarried. Myrtle Springs Cemetery lists her as Ginsyann E. Kuykendall, 21 Oct 1851 to 1923 Van Zandt County, next to Peter (no tombstone photo). The marriage record of “Mrs. J.A.E. Bunch” refers to “Jincy Ann E.” (Gammon), not to Synthia/Cynthia/Cici Price. This means that Eliza J. Bunch would actually be Jincyann’s step-daughter, and “Indian” Bunch would be Jincyann and Archey’s daughter. Note that Synthia Price is listed in 1850 and 1870 as being born in Arkansas, but Peter’s wife in 1880 is listed as being born in Louisiana.
See Hayden Post Office history at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txvzcgrg/grgPO28.htmhttp://www.ro...
and Ginsey Ann E. Gammon at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~famlytre/Gammon~1...
In Myrtle Springs is the small family Gammon Cemetery. The burials listed there are:
J.J. Gammon – Sept 1, 1827 to Nov 13, 1877
Martha wife of J.J. Gammon – Oct 29, 1831 to Aug 31, 1899
There are on-line tombstone photos of them except for Eliza where it is noted that her stone is broken. It is interesting that Eliza Bunch is buried in a Gammon Cemetery, and that she is claimed to have died the same day as Sarah Gammon. Further information claims that J.J. is Jefferson Jackson Gammon and that his wife is Martha Ann Price who he married in Louisiana.
1870 Census – Precinct 2, Van Zandt County, Texas:
185-199 Jeff J. Gammon 45 1825 Georgia
Martha Gammon 29 1831 Louisiana
Thos J Gammon 20 1850 Louisiana
Gensie Gammon 18 1852 Louisiana
Mary McCoy 11 1859 Texas
William McCoy 4 1866 Texas
191-205 Henry McFarland 25 1845 Louisiana
Mary F. McFarland 19 1851 Texas
191-206 James M. Parks 36 1834 Kentucky
Mary J. Parks 25 1845 Georgia
Nancy Gorway 15 1855 Geogia
John Yoes 22 1848 Mississippi
Andrew J. Gammon 16 1854 Texas

Syntha Gammon 12 1858 Texas
Columbus Gammon 11 1859 Texas
Sarah Gammon 8 1862 Texas
John Gammon 4 1866 Texas
According to the above records, Jincy Ann is the daughter of Jefferson Jackson Gammon and Martha Price, and she buried her step-daughter Eliza J. Bunch in her family’s cemetery.
1900 Census – District 103, Navarro County, Texas:
Henry Bunch Feb 1869 31 TX/unk/unk farmer – married 8 yrs
Alice Bunch Jan 1877 23 AL/AL/AL 2 born/2 living
Roy Bunch Apr 1894 6 TX/TX/AL
Nona Bunch Jan 1900 4/12 TX/TX/AL
Chas C Odom Jul 1873 26 TX/MS/MS farm laborer
1900 Census – District 124, Van Zandt County, Texas:
Gincey Kuykendall head 49 Oct 1851 LA/GA/LA widow; 10 born/9 living

Ginsey Ann’s children: Indian Bunch; M.E. (dau), W.J. (son), S.F. (dau), Ada, Nannie and Jessie Kuykendall (total of 6). Was she counting step-children? (Eliza J. and Henry Bunch; plus 3 more Kuykendalls = 11?)
Now back to William W. Bunch:
1880 Census (July 2): Precinct 3, Van Zandt County, Texas
Alexander M. Davis 45 1835 TN/TN/TN farming
Nancy J. Davis wife 36 1844 LA/LA/IL
Marget E. Bunch step-dau 11 1869 TX/TX/LA
Joseph Bunch step-son 10 1870 TX/TX/LA (Josiah)
Archibald Bunch step-son 9 1871 TX/TX/LA
William is claimed to have abandoned his family, and his wife Nancy Price apparently returned to Van Zandt County and remarried. 16 Dec 1879 in Van Zandt Co, Texas – Mrs. Nancy J. Bunch to A.M. Davis. Laborn Bunch has not been found, so may have died before 1880.
1880 Census: Red Colony, Sevier County, Arkansas
William Bunch age 30 born in Texas; father Tennessee; mother Tennessee; farmer
Nancy Bunch (wife) age 29 born in Arkansas; parents’ birthplace blank
David Bunch (son) age 2 born in Arkansas; father Tennessee; mother Arkansas
This is a different Nancy, and refers to the marriage record found in Sevier County, Arkansas of William W. Bunch, 33, to Nancy Heard, 27 on 20 May 1877. No doubt this is the same William as in Texas because his father and other family members lived in Sevier County, and he named a son David.
1900 Census: Clear Creek, Sevier County, Arkansas
Listed in household of Elijah Roberts (born Louisiana, no known relation):
William M. Bunch boarder 55 Sept 1844 TX/TN/TN widowed; farm labor
Lucindy C. Bunch boarder 17 July 1882 AR/TX/AR
David M. Bunch boarder 22 April 1878 AR/TX/AR sawmill laborer
1900 Census – Canton, District 124, Van Zandt County, Texas
40 Arch H. Bunch head 29 May 1871 TX/TN/LA married 3 yrs
Allice B. Bunch wife 24 Feb 1876 TX/AL/LA 2 born/2 living
Ollie B. Bunch dau 2 Sep 1897 TX/TX/TX
Bessie R. Bunch dau 1 Sep 1898 TX/TX/TX
John B. Whitlock bro-in-law 20 Dec 1879 TX/AL/LA
44 Jefferson F. Bunch (Josiah) head 30 Apr 1870 TX/TN/LA married 7 yrs
Martha B. Bunch wife 25 Jan 1875 TX/AL/AL 4 born/4 living
James A. Bunch son 6 Dec 1893 TX/TX/TX
Joseph H. Bunch son 5 Mar 1894 TX/TX/TX
Lewis E. Bunch dau 3 May 1897 TX/TX/TX
Rubby O. Bunch dau 7/12 Oct 1899 TX/TX/TX
There is another record that has to be considered for William W. Bunch since he was known by the 1870 census to have been living in Grayson County. An undetermined William Bunch married Nannie Jones on 29 April 1874 in Grayson County, Texas. It appears a daughter was born as a result of this marriage:
1880 Census – Precinct 2, District 7, Grayson County, Texas:
Daniel Jones 66 1814 TN/TN/TN
Jane Jones wife 68 1812 KY/England/KY
Mattie Bunch g-dau 5 1875 TX/TN/TN
1900 Census – Whitewright, District 105, Grayson County, Texas:
Chas. L. Jordan head 62 Mar 1838 VA/VA/VA married 42 years
Isabelle G. Jordan wife 59 Jun 1840 TN/TN/TN no children
Mattie Bunch housekeeper 25 1875 KY/KY/KY
In 1800, there are no other Bunch families I know of in Grayson County. There is another William W. Bunch born in Georgia that shows up in Grayson County by 1900 when he married Lottie Davis, who is supposed to have been born in Van Zandt the daughter of John Davis and Mary Bailey (see Akers Cemetery). This William Bunch is no known relation but might be a distant cousin.
Not sure if this fits anywhere:
1880 Census (June 1): District 120, Van Zandt County, Texas (family 11)
A.M. Davis age 40 born in Georgia; father Tennessee; mother Tennessee; farming
Emily C. Davis (wife) age 36 born in Texas; father Virginia; mother South Carolina
Benj. Jones (son) age 4 born in Texas; Father Texas; mother Texas
Matie A. Jones (dau) age 1 born in Texas; father Georgia; mother Texas
Anna M. Bunch (widowed) age 37 born in Alabama; father Georgia; mother Alabama (who?)
I don't know if this answers any questions, but it did create a few more in my mind. Dan
