I just added three links to sites that have this Ann's maiden names as King, not Wilds and show that one of her husbsands was a Wilds and she was the 'widow Wilds', not a Wilds by birth.

I'm not saying they're right and what is here on Geni is wrong. I don't know enough her connections (my son's paternal side) to be sure, but trees on Ancestry also have her as a King by birth. Geni is the only site I've seen that has her parents as the Wilds couple attached here. So I posted the other links so their sources and documentation can be reviewed to hopefully assist in sorting it out.

For example:

http://www.vaiden.net/collins_descendents.pdf

#1. SOURCE; "Wills and Administrations, Vol. 1 1647 - 1758" (page 35).
Thomas Wilds, dying intestate, Administration requested by William Collins who married Ann his relict, April 3,
1673. Recorded April 9, 1673. Security Thomas Parker and Thomas Poole. (Will Book B, pt. 2).
#2. Misc. items for Collins. Marriage Records - Isle of Wight County, Virginia. (The following item may be the
father of Ann King Wilds, the wife of William Collins of the Isle of Wight County, Virginia). April 19, 1648 John
King and Lawrence Ward (land grant), 50 acres on the end of a branch of the Pagan Bay Creek called the
Freshett, begining at Turkey Hill for the transfer of himself twice, Elizabeth his wife and 8 persons.
Source; W.F.T. Vol. 15 Tree 2711.
Ann was the widow of Thomas Wilds. And the record of King and Queen County shows that one Ann Collins,
widow, married (3rd marriage) Alex Murre (or Merry).

clearly shows that she was the widow of Thomas Wilds who died intestate and then she married secdonly William Collins and then thirdly Alex Murre (aka Murray). It states she was 'the widow of Thomas Wilds'. And the listing as Ann King Wilds indicates she was a King by birth and married Thomas Wilds as her first husband.

Debbie Gambrell - agreed & fixed. Good work.

From http://shaybo-therisingtide.blogspot.com/2011/08/descendants-of-joh...

She's my son's paternal ancestor, just haven't gotten it connected here on Geni. Anyway, all the children show the surname Collins, which is how my son is connected to her . And yet her profile lists her as Ann Murre (King). I was going to add Collins to her married names but it's locked. So I put it under the section where other names can be listed. It makes since to have Collins attached to her name since she has so many Collins descendants who wouldn't necessarily be looking for her any other way.

Find-a-Grave shows these two children:

John Collins
1641–1693

Thomas Collins
1647–1748

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/93426353/anne-wilds_collins_murre

And this research

http://www.vaiden.net/collins_descendents.pdf

shows:

Children of WILLIAM COLLINS and ANN KING are:
i. ANN4
COLLINS, b. Abt. 1643, Isle Of Wright County, Virginia.
4. ii. JAMES COLLINS, b. 1645; d. 1766, Caroline County, Virginia.
5. iii. THOMAS COLLINS, b. Abt. 1647, Isle Of Wright County, Virginia; d. Bef. January 03, 1747/48, Caroline
County, Virginia.
iv. WILLIAM COLLINS, b. 1649, Isle Of Wright County, Virginia; d. Aft. 1691, King & Queen County, Virginia.
6. v. JOHN COLLINS, b. Bet. 1640 - 1655, King an Queen County, Virginia; d. January 16, 1692/93, Isle Of
Wright County, Virginia.

and that is the best-researched site I've found them on. It's where the clarification about Ann herself came from.

Nope, it doesn’t work. It’s an earlier generation.

See http://shaybo-therisingtide.blogspot.com/2011/08/descendants-of-joh...

Because geni has limited name fields, this is how I enter multiple surnames, it’s the “legal” way.

Surname at birth: maiden name (only)
Last name: surname at death (only)

Kids are out of luck. They can find their surname under AKA, so enter it there. Geni search picks it up; but geni search will not find hyphenates or other extra legal displays.

Ann Murre died in 1700 at age 49, which means she was born 1651.

It’s not just Geni that’s a mess - Collins of Virginia have been a genealogical nightmare for generations, and there’s no real proof of much anywhere.

Wikitree is trying to clean up also. I’m not quite on board with all their tree decisions so far, but their notes and sources are certainly good.

See for example

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Caufield-24

And the “comments” from Chet Snow, who has an impressive background (retired historian) and whom I’ve seen before on good Wikitree profiles.

He wrote:

As part of the "Virginia Collins family restoration" I have removed Caufield-24 as wife of William Seward and mother of any of his children. William Seward's wife is represented by Elizabeth Caufield-44 . More will be added to clarify these relationships in the near future so please be patient while the group involved can research relationships and make correct family connections.

That said, http://shaybo-therisingtide.blogspot.com/2011/08/descendants-of-joh... is probably wrong about Elizabeth Caufield and Margaret Weeks.

I just don’t think he had a child at 93.

John Collins of Surry County

Two studies, probably both have flaws.

  • Prewitt, Richard A. The Collins Book: Joseph Collins and Lucy Marchbanks, their descendants. < PDF >
  • Descendants of John Collins I < PDF > “The first two generations are very questionable and are in dispute by many. They are placed here only a guide to do additional research, to prove or disprove.”

lol....good point about having a child at 93. Extremely unlikely! lol Well, some lines are just difficult and this seems to be one. Thanks for looking into it further, Erica. It seems to be a family that no one has been able to correctly sort, in which case we just have to do the best we can and use some judgement like 93-year-old fathers, etc. lol

But for me, this brings me to question whether my son's paternal line should just disconnect with
Thomas Collins I
BIRTH ABT. 1647 • Isle of Wight, Virginia, Colonial America
DEATH ABT. 1748 • Caroline County, Virginia, Colonial America

and parents unknown. That seems to be the case.

I didn’t see a good reference for this Thomas but I’ll look again.
