

I am sure that my Scots relatives born before the act of Union would strenuously object to being subject to England, in fact may fought the english crown and died as a result.
If this is the reason, then why aren't current borders currently "enforced" for other countries? The Alsace-lorraine region is
case in point.
At least the 'Powers that be' should give us minions a choice in the matter.
Personally, I think for genealogy that we need to have both the current day & historic place name. For example the shtetls of the Pale of Russia / Poland / Ukraine, which no longer exist, are best identified by GPS coordinates and “nearby” places, but our records show the historic name. So it’s really better labeling needed, and leaving politics aside.
