Private User - do you think Sir Hew could have had an earlier daughter Marion Dalrymple born 1686?

Erica,

According to Stirnet, Sir Hew Dalrymple had two daughters named Marion. Both are listed as daughters of his first wife, Marion Hamilton. One of these two daughters is said to have married Sir Ludovick Grant of that Ilk, afterwards Sir Ludovick Colquhoun of Luss, and to have died on 17 January 1735.

It would appear to be the case, though, that Sir Ludovick Grant’s wife may have been Sir Hew’s daughter by his second marriage to Elizabeth Hamilton, although, presently I cannot be certain of this. See extracts below mentioned:

24 July 1713 x 1 September 1713: Nomination by Sir Hew Dalrymple of Northberwick, lord president of session, of dame Elizabeth Hamiltoun, his spouse, as tutorix and curatrix of Marion Dalrymple, their daughter, with consent of Sir David Dalrymple of Halls, bt., and others.

4 August 1727: Copy letter from James Grant of Grant and Sir Hew Dalrymple of North Berwick [about the] clandestine marriage of Ludovick Grant, the writer’s son, and Marion Dalrymple, recipient’s daughter.

Yes, it was a controversial marriage. Do we know why? To me, though, she was more the younger Marion, as Sir Ludovic was also born 1707, and it seems unlikely he’d seek a bride born 1686.

I think everything else is resolved.

I should be clear. We have a baptism record for the younger Marion Dalrymple of May 01, 1712 North Berwick. This doesn’t prove she’s Elizabeth’s daughter, but she cannot have been Marion’s, as Sir Hew married Elizabeth on 6 April 1711.

I believe this record is undated?

It is however explicitly describing only one Marion daughter, by Elizabeth, and not two. Which leads me to the elder did not survive.

Erica,

Just to clarify. The record you cite may be a summary of the contents of two bonds of provision.

The first bond appears to be dated 30 May 1707. This seems to refer to Sir Hew's children by his first marriage to dame Marion Hamilton, that is Hew, John, William. Elizabeth, James and Helenor Dalrymple.

The second bond appears to be dated 13 August 1728. This is evidently concerned with the provision made for Marion and Joanna Dalrymple, his daughters by his second marriage, as well as three of his grandchildren, that is Marion Dalrymple, his grandchild, eldest daughter of Sir Robert Dalrymple of Casteltoun, Hew and Marion Dalrymple, children of Mr. Hew Dalrymple, son of said Sir Hew.

Thanks, Neil. So if there was a first Marion, she was dead by 1707, when she isn’t mentioned?
