William Marks is probably the brother of Fennel Marks, both probably the sons of John Marks and Hannah Eidson. These men are found in Bute (later Warren) County, North Carolina. Fennel has an estate file in Bute County dated 1777 (link below). He married Amey Newman, daughter of Thomas Newman.

William Marks married Temperance Wright (not Clare as stated here). Temperance Wright is the daughter of William Wright and Rocksilary Howell. Her brother John Wright married Nancy Ann Tarver (later married John Dew). Nancy is the daughter of Benjamin Tarver.

At William Wright's death, Susannah Wright, sister of Temperance Wright Marks, became the ward of William Marks as is noted in William Wright’s estate file (link below). Susannah later married John Certain of Granville County, North Carolina and after his death, she moved to Chatham County, North Carolina to live close to her sister, Temperance and brother-in-law, William Marks. This is proven in the Revolutionary War widow pension file of Susannah (link below).

Susannah Wright Certain lived to make the 1850 Chatham County, North Carolina Census where Mary Newman age 18 is living with her. Bennett Newman is living next door with John Sartin (Certain), son of Susannah Wright Certain. These Newman children are probably related to the Fennel Marks / Amey Newman family (more research required).

William Marks and Temperance Wright had at least 5 children in Bute/Warren County. They moved from Warren County to Chatham County in the late 1790s and lived around the area of Pea Ridge Road and Gum Springs Baptist Church Road in the Hall River area of Chatham County, North Carolina. Abner Gunter states in the Rev War widow pension file of Susannah Wright Certain that he now owns the plantation of William Marks the brother-in-law of Susannah Certain and the Marks graveyard is on his land and that his wife, Susan [Marks] is the niece of Susannah Wright Certain.

William Marks is listed as 45 and over on the 1800 Chatham County, North Carolina Census making him born before 1755, around the same time as Fennel Marks, thus William and Fennel are probably brothers.

Children of William Marks and Temperance Wright are:
William Marks Jr. (1774-1842) m. Margaret Salter, dau. of William Salter, of Bladen County
James Marks (1775-1830) m. Catherine 'Caty' Gunter, dau. of Isham Gunter
John Marks (1776-1845) m. Mary Gunter, dau. of Isham Gunter
George Marks (abt. 1777) m. possibly Celia Kennon, dau. of Richard Kennon
Susan Marks (1779-1841) m. Abner Gunter, son of Thomas Gunter
Ewell Marks (1780-1852) removed possibly to Arkansas
Elizabeth Marks (abt. 1781) possible, more research required
