Notes- HH

1. This transcript made by me from 1938 transcript sent to Mr. Mimms W. Lee, Esq. from DAR. The DAR record was from Reverend George W. Beale, D. D. who made the original transcription and sent it to the DAR in 1911/1912. The entries were reviewed by Casanova [sic! Cazenove] G. Lee of Washington, D. C. and held as authentic by him.

2. Dr Casanova [sic! Cazenove] Lee also held at the time (1938) that the Bible entry, re Thomas Lee of Ditchley, was proof that Thomas Lee was the son of Richard and Judith Lee, but he noted that he could find no supporting proof in Richard's will or its probate regarding Thomas' name or legacy.

3. This Thomas Lee of Ditchley entry is the sole evidence that Thomas was associated with Ditchley. He may well be of the Lees of Ditchley, but he was not the son of Richard and Judith LEE who were the owners of Ditchley at the time. Ditchley Hall was the LEE family seat, so it is reasonable to suspect that other LEE family groups were living somewhere on the property from time to time. Further, it is possible that all the LEEs were locally identified with Ditchley whether they actually lived there or not.

Best regards,

Hugh (HH)

Here's the other Samuel Griffin, married to "Ann" Rout: Samuel Griffin

Regarding "Ditchley", it seems that the entire neighborhood began taking its name from the plantation. When the name does not specifically refer *to* the plantation, it can be found described as a "populated place" (US Geological Survey) or an "unincorporated community" (Wikipedia). How old this terminology is, I do not know; but the original tract was patented and named in 1651.

Heathsville, where Samuel Griffin the 6th lived, is ome miles up the peninsula to the northwest, and has been the county seat of Northumberland County since 1861.

I can find no primary documentation on any of the above - and there is another suspect marriage, "Richard Adams and Elizabeth Griffin married April ??, 1764".

There was a Col. Richard Adams, Sr., married to an Elizabeth Griffin - but the marriage date was 10 Apr 1755, and her parents were Captain Leroy Griffin and Mary (or Mary Ann) Bertrand. A claim has been laid for Lee Of Virginia (Cobb's Hall) ancestry for Captain Leroy Griffin, but it appears to be speculative to dubious.

Merge 'em up and isolate? Or mark both sets for deletion?
