It has been claimed that the Gavin Hamilton treated here, who has been misidentified as William Gavin Hamilton in a number of pedigrees, was the son of John Hamilton and Agnes Sempill, who were residents of Glasgow in Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is said that he was born at Glasgow in about 1630 and that he subsequently married Elspeth Norrie at Edinburgh on 10 June 1658. All of this is false

John Hamilton and Agnes Sempill did have a son named Gawene Hamilton, whose baptism was registered at Glasgow on 20 March 1631, but this child is not the same person as the man who married Elspeth Norrie in Edinburgh on 10 June 1658. Elspeth Norrie's husband, who was a pewterer in Edinburgh, was the son of Robert Hamilton, a resident of Cambuslang in Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Moreover, Elspeth Norrie's husband died before 30 July 1669, the date upon which he was interred at Greyfriars Burying-ground in Edinburgh, Scotland.

It follows, therefore, that Elspeth Norrie's husband cannot possibly be the same person as the man named Gavin Hamilton, who made his last will and testament in St. George's County, in Colonial Maryland, in 1698.

In view of the foregoing, and in the absence of evidence to the contrary, I propose to disconnect the man named Gavin Hamilton, treated here, from the family tree of John Hamilton and Agnes Sempill, residents of Glasgow
