Jacob Shope took in my great grandfather, Godfrey Wade, sometime between 1856 and 1860 when Godfrey was less than ten years old and after Godfrey had lost his parents to illness. Godfrey immigrated to the US from Switzerland in 1856. I would love to know more about this relationship…how Jacob came to know Godfrey and his parents, and where Godfrey’s parents were when they died. I also believe Jacob changed Godfrey’s last name to Wade, and would like to know Godfrey’s original surname. (Wade is not a Swiss surname). Any help would be appreciated…
