My third paternal GGF is Samuel Monroe, born 1776-1779 Port Tobacco, MD, Clan Munro data says his father was John (parents unknown), a brother John b.1772, a brother Barnabas b. 1788, and three sisters whose names are not known . The internet is flooded with numerous family trees and other data claiming this John is John William Monroe of Fairfield, Conn. True Lines in Ancestry even sa6ys so. However not a single one gives any shred of evidence that this is true. I spent hundreds of hours over many, many years searching for proof of these claims to no avail. With the advent of DNA testing I found out why. My Y chromosome tested against a known descendent of one of John William's brothers shows no connection!
Samuel being born 1776-1779 has to be in the 1790 census somewhere, hopefully in Maryland (presuming the family had not moved). In all of Maryland in 1790 there are only eleven Monroe households. Five of these are in Charles County with two being in Port Tobacco. These are a Thomas and a John on adjacent census lines. John's enumeration gives numbers, sex, and age groups that exactly match what is given for this family by Clan Munro.. Although I have been unable to discover further proof this John almost certainly is Samuels father. His father certainly is not John William. Unfortunately I have been unable to trace whos John's parents are .It some ways it is too bad John William is incorrect as his line seems to reliably go back hundreds of years to the Chief's of Clan Munro and Barons Of Foulis in Scotland.
