My great grandmother Classina Sophia Botes (1905-1989), daughter of Willem Jacobus Botes (1872-1939) and Cecilia Jacoba Barnard (1874-1943) is buried at West Park Cemetery in Johannesburg, but without a headstone.

We believe that she was buried with/near her parents mentioned above, who have photographed graves (thank you Danie) and have grave number details as:

West park cemetery
Grave no. 96/8 (or 5)
Gen memorial section

I have repeatedly reached out to the council/cemetery to ask them how I could go about having a headstone placed for her but have never had a reply.

To further compound my grave-problem, her daughter - my maternal grandmother - Cecilia Jacoba Nel (Beckley, also known as Sheila) - should be buried nearby, but I cannot find evidence of her grave either and whether she has a headstone herself.

I'm currently in New Zealand, else I'd go there myself! Does anyone have any advice?

Cecilia Jacoba Beckley

It would be a good idea to contact someone at https://www.eggsa.org/index.php/en/ - eGGSA have a gravestoneproject - http://www.graves-at-eggsa.org/main.php?g2_itemId=43 and may be able to offer advice.

This is the link to the grave register for West Park Cemetery for Cecillia Jacoba Nel. If you have the grave numbers for the others, it may give you an indication if they are buried in close proximity. The transcription of the register appears to be incomplete.

Thank you both!

The mystery deepens now I've found Classina's husband Thomas Henry Beckley - who seems to have been reinterred! His grave number matches Cecilia's.

Wish I'd made this post years ago!

My mother, and 2 brothers are also buried in West Park cemetery. My family will not allow me to go there, as they say it is dangerous for a woman on her own. I have one gravestone, but not for my mother, Muriel Grace Whitfield, nee Berry and youngest brother, Keith Whitfield. Would just like to go there and see where they are buried, and then make a decision, about a gravestone. Now adays here in SA sadly many gravestones get kicked or pushed over and the granite gets taken, and even the fences around the graveyards are broken down. It is sad. Things just get ruined here by people. Moyra Buchanan

Moyra Lila Buchanan I have read about that - it pains me to think about the desecration of our ancestors graves. My mother's mom, Cecilia Nel, died in a very tragic car accident on her way to hear the news of her eldest daughter's pregnancy. My mother and her sister Dianne married two Williams' brothers, and the car was being driven by Dianne's husband. My poor mother had been on a walk and came upon the accident scene at just 17. To have received this help tonight will move my mother to tears, I just know it.

In case anyone is interested in a further mystery...I came upon a record on the National Archives for a divorce for Cecilia & Stanley (the rubbish) which shocked my mother. It was Cecilia VS Stanley, and the record is dated 1967, the year she was killed in the accident. The Rubbish had been having many affairs and remarried very quickly. He had treated my mother's mother very badly and we wonder if she had initiated a divorce before her death - finally perhaps gaining the strength to leave him. I have requested a photo of the document from EGGSA, because just imagine! None of the family knew of a divorce or impending divorce.

We wondered if maybe this kind of record was standard upon the death of a spouse. I hope not!

Moyra Lila Buchanan - I have a friend in Johannesburg - big and burly & streetsmart - who is willing to go and look at the cemetery for me - shall I ask him to look for your relatives you mentioned? Could you give me any more info?

Thanks all for letting me waffle! I hope to hear back re: the mystery divorce soon from EGGSA.

William Archibald Brown Rowan I have tears in my eyes - thank you for finding this record for me.

Danielle - glad I was able to help.

Unsure if anyone’s mentioned Sarah Welham from Friends of Johannesburg Cemeteries. She did an incredible job locating my second great grandmother’s grave (unmarked) in West Park Cemetery: https://joburgheritage.org.za/friends-of-the-cemeteries/

Highly recommend reaching out to Sarah.

Private User thank you so so much. I’m going to do that now.

Private User you’re my 7th cousin via this very line :)

@Danielle Jade Hamman I have Waldeck in my family too. My great-grandmother was Aletta Barkley, daughter of John Barkley of Bloemhof fame. He disappeared in 1870 and Aletta later married John Henry Waldeck, no children.
