Perhaps Howes should be changed to Hawes.
Howes is the mother's maiden name.

Looks like his name at death was Thomas Howes.

Okay. Changed spellings still occur nowadays.

My dad preferred spelling his name "Melvyn" instead of the birth/legal "Melvin". As kids do, they want to be different in various ways. There was an actor named Melvyn Douglas who gained fame the 1930s, which spurred this shift. People who knew dad still wonder why his headstone name shows Melvin.

:). Also, they were more fluid on spelling in earlier days, and I see records for this family both as Hawes & Howes.
