Is the Old Cheraw label confirmation of Native American heritage, or only that of originating from a certain area? I am descended from the Pounds family who founded Cheraw, Mississippi and am trying to determine if the label denotes connection to a lineage or to a place.

When Rachelle puts Old Cheraw on a profile she is usually referring to Old Cheraw indians unless stated or implied otherwise, because there is also the Old Cheraw District of SC where non-Natives also settled. So it can be sometimes refer to the place, other times to the people. Sometimes to both You have to read it in the context of her complete notes. I'm no authority on her notes, but that's my take on it. I do know from having been in her Facebook research group before she archived it, she considered that Pounds line to be Native American.

I have some folks in my tree who were from Cheraw District that I have nothing to indicate they were Old Cheraw indians, but then I also have Old Cheraw indian ancestry.

My understanding is that Rachelle is no longer active on Geni, having moved on to other projects. However, some of her research team who worked closely with her on the DNA research are attached to some of the Native profiles. My suggestion would be to contact the profile managers of specific profiles on Geni that you might have questions about, if the notes don't clarify things. Or you can always start a discussion with the others attached to the profile under the Discussion tab.

I found this today, and it looks very interesting. https://scgenweb.org/Browder/SumterCountyGenealogicalSociety-ACriti...

I wont take the time to read all of that now, but Rachelle is our tribal historian, and unless it comes from her, i would be very careful. There are others out there that claim to be Old Cheraw but have no continuous community. Linda Carr Buchholz is still here with us on Geni, and may be able to help answer questions as well. There arent many of us left here, and there may be less of us here eventually. We will try to answer the best we can like Cousin Debbie Gambrell did above. We are not the tribal historian though.

Dera "D.D." Talley (Williams) hello 7th cousin once removed 😁
