Thanks. So the suspect children of James Joseph Gahan and his wife Caroline Floyd in Geni are now just: Matthew, Laurence, John (not the genuine child John Henry Gahan 1911-1983), Margaret, Selia, Mary Kehoe (not the genuine Mary Mathews), (No Name) and Josephine.
Hopefully disconnecting Michael won't hurt by making any rationales for connecting these suspect children at the time less clear. I guess we have to be patient and hope the issue moves forward. I guess I'll add some of the other children (genuine ones).
Adding the genuine children will help disqualify the false ones, for example if a proven child is born Jan 1930 and a suspect child is born May 1930 we can disconnect the suspect child because it isn't biologically possible for both people to be children of the same couple.
Another method is to prove who the suspect children are in order to prove they cannot be connected to this family. Eg if we find a marriage record for Laurence stating he was born in Florida then we can disconnect him but if the profile is just a blank with a name then it becomes a he said/she said situation where you are asking us to break a connection without any evidence.
I've now added the other genuine children I know of. Josephine is one of the suspect children and she was born only about 10 months before the next genuine child. Perhaps someone will know why the children of the now disconnected Michael Gahan have some names the same as Michael's purported sibilngs - like Laurence. Perhaps someone put them as his siblings rather than children.
The problem with Josephine Shanahan is that her DOB is Jan 1st 1904.
This date comes from cert death certificate in 2002 and my concern is that the "Jan 1st" is a default setting from a database rather than a reliable date and therefore casts doubt on the year as 1904 also so ruling her out based on 9 month gestation period is high risk.
Having said that these two threads look to be very informative (i also think I know one of the users posting in that chat)

given that James Joseph Gahan spent his whole life in the Naki I'll disconnect Josephine Shanahan who was born in Ireland.
FYI i post notes like this to remind myself more than anyone else of why I am making changes so that if a question comes up (sometimes years later) we are not reliant on my hazy memory.
disconnected Mary Kehoe I found records for a woman with the same name but she is baptising her children in Ireland in the 1870s so maybe related butt certainly not daughter of James
Guy Driscoll I found the smoking gun :)
At some point James has been merged with a profile named William Gahan, who amongst other things was the father of Selia Gahan per this 1901 census (lucky for us it's such an unusal name!) https://www.myheritage.com/research/record-10199-1732816/selia-gaha...
Other children in the family are Laurence Gahan, Anne Gahan, Michael Gahan, Eliza Gahan, Margaret Gahan
Matthew, Laurence, John (not the genuine child John Henry Gahan 1911-1983), Margaret, Selia, Mary Kehoe (not the genuine Mary Mathews), (No Name) and Josephine
No worries, I am going to put a bit more effort into the US family but will leave NZ to you. I suspect we won't be able to add much more to the Irish profiles, they seem to all come from the same county but that doesn't prove much without understanding the size of the Gahan family in county Wicklow in the mid-1800s
Alex, I just realised the suspect Matthew J Gahan is still in there as J & C's son. Not one in the Irish census I know.
