The Story of William Jeptha Parks, A Confederate Soldier
WILLIAM JEPTHA (Bill) PARKS is the son of JAMES PARKES and ELIZABETH JANE (BETSY) SHEPPARD.
WILLIAM was a farmer and a stove mason, by trade.
He married SARAH HAYNES, September-3-1846 at Franklin County, Georgia.
WILLIAM J. and SARAH (HAYNES) PARKS are the parents of
ZACHARIAH (ZACK) PARKS,
MARY (PARKS) LOCKLEAR,
SARAH LAVINA (PARKS) QUICK, YORK,
JAMES WILLIAM PARKS and
MARTHA (PARKS) QUICK, known as MATTIE.
In the 1850 census of Acworth (Cobb county) Georgia, WILLIAM J. is living next door to his older brother WILBURN PARKS. WILLIAM J. was living at Curry (Talladega county) Alabama, in 1860.
Curry is a unincorporated community on Alabama State Route, highway # 21, about 6.2 miles northeast of Talladega (Talladega county) Alabama.
He served in the civil war in Company # G, 14th. Regiment, Alabama Infantry, C.S.A., he was a Fifer, Musician and Teamster...His company was known as the "Hillabee True Blues.
" WILLIAM J. enlisted July-24-1861 in Hackneyville (Tallapoosa county) Alabama, under Capt. HENRY BROOKS, which is where the Hillabee True Blues, came into service.
The name Hillabee True Blues was taken from the Muskogee Indian name for the spot on Hillabee Creek.
The 14th. Regiment was in at lease 57 skirmishes and battles. The more popular ones being the siege of Yorktown, Seven Pines, Mechanicsville, Gaines Mill, second Manassas, Harpers Ferry, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Fair Oaks, Cold Harbor, New Market Crossroads, second Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg,
The Wilderness, Spotsylvania Courthouse, and the last battle for WILLIAM J. PARKS, was at Appomattox Courthouse, where he was under Capt. PERRY LOWNDES.
According to WILLIAM J's son ZACHARIAH (ZACK) PARKS, he states in his military assessment papers, that his dad was shot going over a fence, about 30 minutes before, Gen. ROBERT E. LEE, surrendered, at Appomattox County, Virginia. WILLIAM JEPTHA PARKS served from the start of the war, til the end of the war.
