This Joseph Martin was married to my fourth great grandmother, Johanna Rawlinson. The family lived locally here in Richland County, SC and the family has been here a long time. I have been to both their graves (Martin family has been here for generations and still here). Our Big-500 DNA is (R1A) R-BY27212. I would be glad to compare family trees with others. It's always possible that we are joined to the wrong tree. His father was William Martin. The only true way to know is the DNA. Would love to know what other Martin's haplotypes are. We have Irish, (possible Scottish), English roots, with possible Netherlands roots.

Patricia, your YDNA information is 100% correct and matches my Block Tree. My Williams line shares a common ancestor with your brother David W. Martin and Bruce Hale. They, in turn, share a common ancestor with Jan S. Raap of Amsterdam and Jaap van der Horst of Rotterdam.

I have communicated with both Jan and Jaap. Jan is much closer in time to our Martin line, and Jaap has the oldest match in our Block Tree dating to about 915 CE. Take out Jaap and Jan's common ancestor, and the Time Tree dates R-BY27212 at around 1426 CE.

Based on my research of the various Martin lines, I believe that one branch of the Martins migrated from England to Ireland - probably were Anglo-Norman invaders - and the other branch is the original Martins in England who were Anglo-Normans. This could help explain the connection to the two Dutch matches.

Your line appears to me to be English in origin, and my line as well. The group R-BY34211 appears to be the Irish branch descending from Abram Martin, who migrated from Dublin to Colonial Virginia. Some of the surname matches in this branch include Clements.

FYI, we are Group 8 in the Martin Surname Project at FTDNA.
