John Newton Penland, son of William Penland and Annis Donnal Penland, married Alice B. Moore, she was the daughter of Captain William Hamilton Moore, and Mary Ann Cathey Moore.
John Newton Penland's father, William Penland born 1742, Chester County, Pennsylvania, died December 1815, Rowan County, North Carolina.
In 1771, signer of petition to create Burke County, North Carolina. He was a Captain in the Revolutionary War 1779. He was a life long Presbyterian. He died at the age of 72, and he was buried alongside his wife Annis Donnal Penland in Williams Family Cemetery, 7 miles NW of Morganton, Burke County, North Carolina.
