Karen Martin Grace -- are you talking about the relationship paths through the relationship box up at the top of your profile?
If so, go to your mother's profile, and in the relationship box, click on the pushpin until it says that it will calculate relationships to her.
Then try again. I have found that my mother and my father give very different relationships, sometimes.
But in general, the Geni software calculates the shortest route. You can search different pathways from different relationships, and get a very different result.
