We need to find a birth record for Joseph Cottier Cole
Smart Matches are all suggesting that he was born in 1887 in Melbourne however if the claimed parents are correct then this is not physically possible

The claimed father Archibald Hamblin Lillingstone Cole, {{Convict Racehorse 1865}} had been extensively written about so it is not likely that his death date is wrong. Likewise i haven't found anything to support that his claimed mother https://www.geni.com/people/Catherine-Cole/6000000020910746 was in Melbourne during the claimed birth year 1887

Joseph birth registered in 1886

This could be a baptism record for an earlier birth

Thanks,
Victorian BDM only gives the registration year in their search results. I noticed a lot of such records where the registration year happens in the year following. Since the parents still match, then i will have to assume that the actual birth must of occurred in 1885 at the latest, until such time as someone purchases the birth certificate. I'll be searching for the family’s arrival date back in Australia, in case it might be a birth at sea

The father died 18 January 1884 - so the latest birth would be October 1884 - which leads me to think it is a baptism record

Passenger records for the family returning to Australia would definitely assist.

West Australian Metropolitan Cemeteries Board registered Joseph’s age at death as 74, which would make his birth year between 1885 and 1886 neither of which possible if Archibald was his father, unless his father pulled a life insurance fraud
