I'm curious where the letter posted in the section "The Life of the Reverend George Ross" came from.

It begins with:

George Ross Rector (as he is styled in his Presentation) of the Church of New Castle was the second son, that came to mans Estate, of David Ross of Balblair, a gentlemen of moderate fortune, but of great integrity, and Margaret his wife born in the north of Scotland, and in the Parish of Fern, in the Shire? of Ross, about 4 or 5 miles from the shire between two arms of the sea. The Firth f___tum of Murray (Moray), the other of Dornoch. The land laying between the two firths, terminates in a noted point, called Tarbat Ness.

This is the same version published on D.J. Hooker's website.

It does not match the version published in Rossiana.

David Hooker doesn't give a source pointing to where his version was originally published or who was in possession of that copy of the letter.

I'm curious if anyone knows?

Thanks.

Hard to know; but I like this from George to his son John, a particularly the line about obscurity:
"the rise of many familys in these parts, is like the head of the Nile unknown. Their glory consists in their obscurity."

Here's the longer passage you led us to Kelly

"my very good son [John Ross -- dated 1752]

You have enclosed an answer, to your repeated request, wherein you may observe, the easy & regular steps, Providence conducted me to settle in the Country. You may trace your original, from a pure stream, to as pure a fountain. If my posterity contract any blemish, it must proceed from themselves. No original guilt can be imparted to them. Tis well, the rise of many familys in these parts, is like the head of the Nile unknown. Their glory consists in their obscurity. Tis your satisfaction, that it is otherwise with you, your escutcheon, is without blot, or stain. Contend then for the honor of your family, by a kind and generous behaviour, towards the several branches of it. Relieve them from contempt by your beneficence, and put them above the worst, by exercising that ability towards them, which God has blessed you with: which if you do, God will gather you in his good time, to your honest, and worthy progenitors. I have a quick sense of your filial favors, and you may be sure, that I am Dear son,

your most obliged
affectionate father
Geo. Ross"

as an aside: It would be interesting to know more about the son to whom the letter was written: Honorable John Ross Royal Attorney General

Hi Michael. Thanks for your reply.

David Hooker does have some information on his site about John.

http://www.djhooker.com/23/9517.htm

He was an influential man in his time. Not really any sources cited on David’s site, but there are still letters in existence between John Ross & Benjamin Franklin.

https://founders.archives.gov/documents/Franklin/01-11-02-0155

So, there must also be some records or biographies out there relating to John.

My question about the letter to him from his father George revolves around the idea that there seems to be two versions of it. I was just curious if one is a copy of the other or if we could determine which one was closest to the original.

I’ll keep digging.

Hi again Private User.

Not sure if you were genuinely curious about John Ross or just suggesting that route of research, but I came across this today coincidentally, so I thought I'd share.

Thank you Private User

I read with great interest the several passages in the Life and Correspondence of George Read, John's brother-in-law.
These are of particular interest to me in my cultural studies of this period of Colonial American history. I am also engaged in the study of Presbyterian and Anglican / Episcopal responses to the politics of the era.

You may find the following Geni projects of interest as they bear on many of the individuals mentioned in the George Read work:

https://www.geni.com/projects/Church-of-England-Episcopal-Church-panoply-of-Colonial-Pennsylvania-Province/4485851

https://www.geni.com/projects/Society-for-the-Propagation-of-the-Gospel/4488296

The construction of these two projects have helped me better fathom the various political and religious leanings of the Ross family from whom I am descended. (I invite you to join or follow these projects) ;)

I am directly related to one of John Ross' sisters: Margaret Currie . Margaret's husband, the Rev. Currie followed a somewhat similar trajectory in his leanings as dd our Honorable John Ross Royal Attorney General .

In general: The influence of John's father: Rev. George Aeneas Ross, M.A. was quite remarkable,

for my own purposes I footnote:
Rev. William McClenachan who shows up on page 45 of The Life and Correspondence of George Read cited by Kelly Moores.

Yes Private User. Agreed. Both George and his son John were definitely influential men of their time.

I did join the Episcopal Church project. That’s a great timeline. It will be very helpful when I dig further into George.

My interest is actually in using DNA to separate out all of the Ross lines in America. Turns out they’re not all descended from the same patrilineal ancestor.

I’m particularly interested in George’s Y-DNA since he is the only descendant of the Earls of Ross known to have come to America & sire a large family.

If you come across any male descendants in your research that interested in Y-DNA testing, please send them to FamilyTreeDNA and suggest they join the Ross project there.

By the way, I did email David Hooker to see if he has more information on his version of George’s letter, but no response yet.

Has two generations of descendants here on the Geni WFT
