How Would You Interpret This?

Started by Jane Elizabeth Fuller on Monday, December 19, 2022

I've found an important part on my family history on this website but am struggling to know how to interpret it. Here is the link, and I will copy and past the relevant portion: https://www.geocities.ws/keepsakebook/legear.html

4. Barbara Switzer, b. 1758-1759 in Ireland. She married John Long, married 29-DEC-1778 in County Limerick, Ireland, b. ca 1755, d. in Kilcornan, Ireland. Children: 5. i John Long. Third Generation 5. John Long, b. in Rathkeale, County Limerick, Ireland. He married unknown female. Children: 6. i John (James) Long b. ca 1790. Fourth Generation 6. John (James) Long, b. ca 1790. He married Elizabeth Switzer, married 27-JUN-1811 in Rathkeale, County Limerick, Ireland, b. ca 1790 in Rathkeale, County Limerick, Ireland. Children: 7. i Joseph Switzer Long b. APR-1836. Page 2 Fifth Generation 7. Joseph Switzer Long, b. APR-1836 in Newton Robinson, West Gwillimbury, Simcoe County, Ontario, d. 27-OCT-1909 in Newton Robinson, West Gwillimbury, Simcoe Count

The problem with this is I'm not sure if there are TWO John Longs, or three! It's possible that maybe Barbara Switzer died, and her husband remarried and had a child (John James Long) with an unknown female. (John James Long is my 'anchor ancestor')

The other possibility is that Barbara and John had a son named John who was the father of John James Long. HOWEVER Barbara married in 1778, and John James Long was born in 1790. So that means only 12 years elapsed between Barbara's marriage and his birth (unless the dates are wrong...) So, if there WAS a third John Long, he would have become a father at 12 years of age. Not impossible, but highly unlikely...

What do you all think? Looking at the other entries should be some help in knowing just how the owner of the website entered the information.
