When Toivo leaved Hämeenkyrö and moved to Tampere in 1904 He needed a surname. So somebody picked him "Aalto". That's just a normal, common surname based on nature. This was normal practice when people without surnames (or with unsuitable surnames) moved to bigger cities

In the document to move which Toivo got from Hämeenkyrö parish it has "Kylmäkoski" as surname (His dads surname). In Tampere (4 days later) it has changed to "Aalto".

More info on Aalto. Aalto means wave. Kylmäkoski means cold rapids. Maybe the one who chose Aalto as surname for Toivo chose it because both Aalto and Kylmäkoski are related to water.

Toivos father Konstantin Kylmäkoski was paper mill worker in Kyröskoski Mill (which still exists https://www.metsagroup.com/metsaboard/about-us/production-units/kyr... )

Okay. I found the document to move which was given to Toivo when he moved to Tampere. You can clearly see that the surname was changed to Aalto on September 3rd 1904 when Tampere parish received the document to move from Toivo.

Thank you for all the info. I am thrilled to hear from someone in the family. I know nothing about the family. My grandmother spoke very little English so wasn’t able to ask her about family. I don’t think my Dad knew anything either. I love being around the Finns, all my Dads friends were Finns. I belong to the Finlandia club here in Denver, Colorado. I have one friend who is half Finnish. I am my Dads oldest child I will be 83 in a couple weeks my sister just turned 76. He only had one grandchild she is 55. My Dad played the trumpet, he was so good I loved hearing him play. He played in the Finnish band and pitched baseball on the Finnish baseball team in his hometown Maynard, Massachusetts. He also played semi-pro baseball when he was a young man. He passed away March, 1983. I miss him every day.
