William Byrd/Bird was born about 1758 in most likely Bertie Co., NC. He and his wife, Mary moved to Robeson Co., NC before the American Revolution as he served as a soldier in the Wilmington District.Service Source: KELLAM, NC REV ARMY ACCTS, BOOK W, NO 1, 1781-1783, P 55. He was in the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge. His name is spelled Burd in those records. (pg. 32-33 The Patriots at Moores Creek Bridge, B.G. Moss, Scotia-Hibernia Press,Blacksburg, S. C. 1992)
He signed his Will on 13 Jan 1800 in Robeson Co., NC. This Will is recorded in the Robeson Co., NC Court Records in Will Book I page 61-62. There is no probate date. The Will states that he "being very sick but in perfect mind". Most likely he died shortly afterwards. It was witnessed by Jacob Allen and Sarah Lee. Joseph Wood was executor along with his wife, Mary Byrd/Bird.
Byrd, Bird and Burd are used interchangeable in the Bladen and Robeson Co., NC records. They are referring to the same person. On his Will, Bird is used at his signature, but Byrd is used at the heading of the Will.
William Bird may have been a son of Edward & Anne West Bird. Possibly he was the son of Henry Bird. More research is needed.
William Bird/Byrd named 5 children in his Will. He names his wife Mary Byrd. From the Will"....First, I give and bequeath to Mary, my beloved wife, the plantation whereon I now live to do with and dispose of in any manner as she may think best in during her natural life and after her death then to descend to by beloved son, Henry Byrd..."
His children, Elizabeth, William and Mary along with his wife were to receive all the property of a suit pending in the County Court of Robeson Co., NC whereon William Byrd was the plantiff and John Hawthorn, Jr. was defendant. The rest of his property was to be equally divided between "...my beloved wife, Mary and my five (5) children namely...".
