Profiles Mentioned:

I have seen speculation that Eleanor's maiden name was Smith but have never come across any concrete proof or even very strong evidence.

Also, it is virtually certain that Obediah / Obadiah Smith and Mary Cocke were NOT her parents. Among other issues such as geography and naming patterns, Obediah Smith's lengthy 1746 will lays out substantial bequests to his wife and to each of his five sons and three married and unmarried daughters. It never mentions a daughter Eleanor. In fact, his will specifically states - twice - that his eight enumerated offspring are ALL of his children:

"(certain land after son William takes half) to be equally divided between my Seven Children Viz; John, Obadiah, Jacob, Luke, Elizabeth, Ann & Molly. "
"Item. my Will further is that my son William Smith shall pay Seven pounds & ten Shillings for his brothers & sisters, Viz; John, Obadiah, Jacob, Luke, Eliz'th, Ann, Mary."
(Viz in this context means "in other words." Molly is the diminutive form of Mary.)

Primary source documentation (always helpful to cite) : Will of Obediah Smith, 1746, Henrico County, Virginia Deed Book 1744-1748, p. 155.

Eleanor would have been married and bearing children in 1746. Given the particular wording above and in the totality of the will she would have been mentioned in the document or had reason to contest it.

I would love to know Eleanor's maiden name, let alone the names of her parents. In the absence of evidence to the contrary however, I don't think unsourced "speculation" (for lack of a better term) should be included in public trees. Most people who are interested in genealogy merely copy what they see without checking / researching even their direct ancestors. Including speculative ancestors also discourages researchers from trying to find the actual forebearers. (I know some feel differently and of course respect that viewpoint.)

Lt. Obadiah Smith, Sr. John Holcomb
