"She evidently married (1st) c.1388 to Richard son of Robert de Swillington. It that year her grandfather John Talbot made a settlement of lands, and she and her husband were included in the remainders [see first fine copied below]. My guess is that Joan was very young in 1388, at least 7, but more likely 12 or 13. Joan Talbot was still young enough to have 4 children by her 3rd marriage to Simon Leek, which marriage took place in 1405. My guess is that she was born c.1375."

Private User your thoughts?

Wikitree et al think that's the older brother of Sir William Mallory of Papworth, who supposedly died "by 1412" (could be sooner). The Leicestershire Mallorys were prominent, prolific, and well-connected, so it's not unreasonable.

I note, though, that Simon Leek's oldest daughter, Elizabeth Hercy has a birth date guesstimate of c. 1395-1399, which argues that he had a first wife who died before 1405. (Possibly Alice Foljambe, his father's ward? That's exactly what prominent families often did.)

Scratch that last comment, Alice is otherwise accounted for. Alice Plumton

There’s a more detailed discussion at SGM:

From “Did Elizabeth Eure marry thrice?” (SGM, Oct 15, 2015, 5:57:03 AM, Kevin Barton et al] < GoogleGroups >

Elizabeth (Mallory) Eure's parents were Sir Thomas Mallory (died before 1405) and his wife, Joan, daughter and heiress of Thomas Talbot (living 1377, died before 1388), by his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of James Belers/Bellers.

Thomas Talbot in turn was the son and heir apparent of Sir John Talbot (born c.1325, died before 1406), of Swannington, Leicestershire, and Sedgebrook, Lincolnshire, by an unknown 1st wife.

Elizabeth Mallory's mother, Joan Talbot, married (1st) Richard de Swillington (living 1388); (2nd) Thomas Mallory, Knt. (died before 1405); and (3rd) about Jan. 1405 Simon Leeke, Esq. (died c.1439), of Leake and Cotham, Nottinghamshire. Joan Talbot has many descendants by her 3rd marriage to Simon Leeke, Esq.

I also believe, but not 100% sure, that I identified Joan Leek 1st husband also:

Richard Swillington

His father, Robert Swillington, Kt. left 75 estates at his death.

Elizabeth Hercy Is shown only as daughter & co heir of Simon Leek, MP, of Leake & Cotham in the detailed Hercy pedigrees attached to her profile, but as daughter of Joan Talbot in Visitations:

Hercy pedigree in the Visitations of Nottinghamshire, 1569 & 1614. Page 14 < Archive.Org > Has an error: John Leek who married Isabel Towers was the son of Simon Leek.

But she is positioned as eldest daughter, and there did seem some ambiguity about Mallory’s death date …

Technically, the Leicestershire and Yorkshire Mallorys are double-L Mallorys.

Malory with a single L references the Newbold Revel (Warwickshire) line, which is much sketchier.

We've got Thomas Mallory (two Ls, not a knight) and Margaret Grendon, but no cited evidence as to which Mal(l)ory family he belonged to.
Thomas Mallory, of Bramcote
Margaret Mallory

Also, there are at least two Bramcotes, one in Nottinghamshire, one in Warwickshire. This adds to the confusion.

Successfully tracked down Margaret (Grendon) Mallory's connection to Grendon of Grendon - she was from a cadet branch that had gone its own way since the late 12th century.

No closer to figuring out which Mal(l)ory family her husband belonged to, but circumstances are pointing to Malory of Draughton & Newbold Revel!. Wouldn't you know it - the worst documented and most difficult to figure out of the known English Mal(l)ory families!
